1965-1967 do not have mintmarks, and SMS were made 1965-1967. Lets see your 1966-d Quarter.

Your statement was, neither do business strikes.

No year mentioned in your post, and to that I stated not necessarily true.

Of course there are no mintmarked coins from 65-67, anyone knows that.

    BU,

SMS sets were made 1965-1967. During those years the Mint did not use mintmarks on any coins.

Anyways lets get back to the question.

Eric, SMS coins are somewhere between Business Strike and Proof. Business Strike coins are struck once under normal pressure on normal planchets using normal dies. Proof Coins are struck twice (or more) under higher pressure on specially-prepared planchets using highly-polished dies. SMS coins were struck once under higher pressure (but less pressure than for Proof coins) on normal planchets using polished dies.

In general, an SMS coin will be better-struck than a Business Strike coin and will have semi-Prooflike surfaces.

In general yes, but a quality business strike can't always be told from a lower end SMS coin.

    No.

The problem was that once the mint started putting out coins that didn't fit into the regular catagories of Business Strike or Proof they didn't know how to label them. So some were called Matte Proof, some were called Specimen, and sometimes they just labeled them as SMS meaning they came from "Special" Mint Sets (more properly Special Sets from the Mint). Then the satin finish pieces came along and by now all labeling is up in the air witht he satin finish coins sometimes being called Satin Finish and some times being labeled SMS.

As has been stated in many other threads on the same subject there is only 1 way to tell for certain if a '65 thru '67 coin is SMS or not. That is if the coin is Cameo. Only the SMS coins for those years will be Cameo. No business strike from those years is Cameo.

Problem is, not all of the SMS coins have the Cameo effect. So in those cases there is no way to tell with certainty if the coin is SMS or not.

Any possibility your grandparents would be interested in adopting a 63 year old grandson? I don't have any grandparents and desperately need some.

Well, outside of what has already been said the 65-67 SMS do come in a hard case from the US mint. Unfortunatly these are easy to open and close up. But they will be of a higher quality. They were pressed 2x on cleaned dies. IMG_0021.jpg IMG_0023.jpg IMG_0022.jpg IMG_0024.jpg
