Hi I was looking for some advice. I have a 1955 and 1952 proof set in the original boxes. At this time I am thinking about placing them into capital holders but do not know if that is a good idea or not. The main reason I am thinking about this is then I will not worry as much about having to take the coins out of the box or nick one of the coins. Also the cellophane wrapper on the 1952 is yellowed and I am not able to see the coins very well. Thanks
I can't say this holds true with coins amoung the pro's .. but pretty much anything I collect it seems the more in tact original "it" is the better value "it" holds
I think you'd be better off putting them in the holders. This way they'd be better protected. That OGP back then was not the safest environment in which to store proof coins. You did mention "yellowing". Think of what that's going to do to your coins if you continue to leave them in this situation.........
I do not have any coins that are slabbed and I dont know if I want to start. If I did I think it would be later in life but I think I would only do it if I wanted to sell them. My grandfather got me started collecting proofs and I am just working my way backwards from where he started.
I would agree with that on the box sets as the coins were not in the cellowraps like the flat packs were.
Well, if you are a collector and these are for your own enjoyment. Go ahead and do what you want to do, in order to make you haopy. If you are going to resale, keep in the original packageing.
See thats where my problem is. I love the old box sets and would love to keep them in the original package but I also enjoy viewing the coins and I am afraid that I am damage the old cellophane after so long. Sorry to answer the question I am collecting these for myself with the hope one of my children enjoy them someday.
Then you owe it to your children to preserve and conserve them. Put the coins in the holder and save the original packaging.....MHO.
That's what I was just thinking. My 2 year old daughter right now loves looking at my coins and I am a little afraid that she may grab something she should not when I am not looking. If I did not say this thanks everyone for your help.
