I've picked up a couple French Assignats over the last week or so. Got lucky, for whatever reason they seem to be cropping up.

This is Lafaurie #173, issued Jan 7, 1795, late in the lifetime of the assignats, just before France's financial system crumbled. These are printed on very thin paper, like tissue paper.

Here's a close-up of just the corners of the note with some of the details.

    Here's my collection of Assignats.

So, let's see your old notes!

Very nice Dave! I don't have any myself but really admire your collection, which I have visited a few times on your site before.

BTW, can you see what is in the embossed stamp? Was this a standard stamp/seal, or did it differ by regions, issuance, work as a security feature? Just curious if you know or if there is any text in there that conveys any other information.

Thanks Chris. Below is not my image, but comes from the wonderful site assignat.fr. As you can see, the stamp is sort of a typical allegorical design. These assignats were issued across the country, and all typically have watermarks and a "dry stamp" pressed in to them as security features.

Very cool, Richard, thanks for posting. I notice the early ones in Shillings, later ones in Dollars - was there a specific date that we switched to Dollars & Cents?

Cool notes so far. I haven't too much that's as cool as that, but I do have some older notes. From 1879 there's this odd denomination note from Argentina that depicts seals of argentine provinces. Than there's the oldest year I can go back to, 1730. I actually have three different Japanese Hansatsu notes from 1730... they're not too hard to find.
