As the title states... what is your opinion of the tonings effect on value to this 1942 Mercury dime Proof 67? Increase, decrease, or no change in the value? Im curious as to what the consensus is.
Well, since the beauty of toning really varies with the person who sees the coin, that is a toughy! I personally love toning, however not on proofs. To me, when I hear proof, I expect it to look like the day it left the mint. The toning distracts from the proof look, in my opinion. Nice coin though!
WOW! you replied before I could get the poll set up all the way! Good commentary gbroke. So if I had to guess you would probably prefer the coin to be a business strike MS67 and toned rather than Proof67 and toned? Interesting.. but I can see your logic!
yes sir, except its not that black and white though. Some proofs tone in a very nice way that I like. For example, some proof Ike dollars are notorious for turning blue in the fields. I can get on board with that. But yes, if I am looking for a toner, then it will be a business strike 99% of the time.
IMO, it will increase the price a small amount in the positive direction. Not a monster by any means, but attractive looking. That said, the mirrors (or apparent lack thereof) might hold the coin back a bit more than the coloration would improve it -- could be the pictures though.
I e-mailed the seller to see if they could take some more pictures. Maybe they will and if they do I'll be sure to post them here with an update.
Pictures will not tell the story of this coin. Please believe me that these coins (brilliant merc proofs) are one of the most challenging coins to capture in photographs -- bar none. You really, really need to see this coin in-hand to judge it's quality.
Awesome coin Leadfoot! I called the coinshop and got a pretty sweet setup. They will mail the coin to me and not charge shipping, as they are out of state. It just so happens that at the end of the month I will take a trip to their city for a vacation. If I dont like the coin I can just bring it back in person when I go ton my trip and reurn it for a full refund. Avoids paying tax and shipping! Im hoping I wont have to bring it back though.
Nice coins both - to me the toning I can see in the picture does not add any value. Just my humble opinion and I am not a toner collector.
Yes, they have an excellent return policy for sight unseen coins ordered online. Its all in writing. I have ordered from them before and gotten an excellent product with excellent service.
Well, 10 years ago I would have said it hurt its value 5-10% over a blazing white example. Idk about today.
However, realistically, that's not always the case. The older silvers are subject to toning whether a proof or uncirculated.
Beautiful Coin … Some prefer toning and others don’t. Sounds too simple but true. The dime you are displaying is a MS67 certified by one of the best, and should demand a MS67 price. Regardless of tone. When you get to that level of preservation most certified coins I’ve seen all have some tone. Personally I love toning, and fell that any coin (especially from an original roll) that old had to have been exposed to some atmosphere at one time or another, and I would look with a fishy eye at one that displayed none. Yours IMO is a beauty, and it looks like PCGS agrees.
Based on the photos, I think that toning is basically neutral with regards to the value of the coin. And I agree with Gbroke that there are quite a few collectors who prefer their proof coins to be devoid of toning more than mint state examples. Mark PS. Beautiful Proof Merc Leadfoot!
