This is a photo depicting the front doorknob at my house a couple weeks ago. Obviously, it was time to go someplace warm so I traveled to Southern California & a couple places in Mexico. It is nice to get away from the Northeast USA during the winter It was much more sunny & warm in Guadalajara. My Guadalajara hotel offered this great garden where one can relax with cerveza, salsa, & coins. One of our fellow CT members in Guadalajara (Whstler) introduced me to one of his favorite coin shops. Whstler is quite cool & picked me up at my hotel to do some coin shopping. I only had time to visit the one shop with him. While there, he bought some US silver dollars & I bought a bag of 244 Mexican error coins. This is way too many Mexico errors for my collection so I plan to sell a portion of them over the next week or two. We have a local coin show this Sunday where I can show them around. Essentially, the error coin lot consists of about 1/3 off center, 1/3 with clips, and 1/3 blank planchets. Some of the blanks have edge lettering. I look forward to your comments & I’ll post more. Thanks for letting me share.
Thanks Matt, This particular coin dealer in Guadalajara buys & sells a lot of silver. He had a box of un-cataloged world silver coins which I gleaned for keepers. It was fun to save these coins from the melting pot. There were a lot of keepers. Unfortunately, if I expressed too much interest in a coin, then it immediately became very valuable in the dealer’s opinion & therefore expensive for me to buy. I had to curb my enthusiasm in front of the dealer & found that I could get some of the coins at not too much more than melt. I’ll post a photo of the silver coins.
I am pretty jealous about the error coins, but I am more jealous of the pool and the warm weather as I look out my office window and see melting snow and cold rain.
Thanks Jello, I also picked-up these silver coins. My new friend Whstler purchased all the dealer’s USA silver dollars. The dealer had a box of silver world coins intended for smelting if the price of silver went any higher. I’d like to think I saved these few silver coins from the melting pot. The Great Britain Shilling is dated 1857. It looks to be a VF35 to me. The little Peru ½ Dinero coins are all dated 1916 and look like they were just taken from an original roll. I asked to buy them all & the dealer saw my interest & asked for a high price. When I reluctantly said I only wanted a few around melt for my friends, the dealer reassessed his price much closer to melt & I grabbed 4. It was interesting buying coins from this dealer. My special thanks go out to Whstler for his help with all the negotiation tactics.
Very nice Collect89. I usually go by myself when I go across the border but that is "once in a blue moon". If you do sell a couple of the off centers, let us know. I would like to meet a member on here who's cool and stays near by. Not many around though from what I see.
Hello George, Good question. I didn't know about the overdate varieties when I bought the coins. I read about the overdate & the spelling Feruana and Peruana on these 1916 dated coins when I got home. I believe that all four coins are the normal date & spelling variety. There is a die crack on the 6 of one coin. Here are a couple close-up photos showing that they are the normal date & spelling variety.
Hi Collect89, I'll be visiting Guadalajara later this year. I wanted to ask you when you were at the coin shop did you happen to notice if the dealer had any of the 2010 bicentennial/centenial commemorative silver coins for sale? If so did you happen to see how much he was selling the for. The set, in the US, is going for $250. I was hoping to find it for a lower cost Thanks!!
Maybe whstler will see your post or you could send him a PM. He lives in Guadalajara & visits all the shops. I noticed that he has a classified ad here at CT offering to locate Mexican coins for CT members. Check it out in the classified section under world coins.
Hello Jello, Hello Ripley, The Guadalajara dealer has a snack size zip-lock baggie about 1/2 full of these tiny little coins. It had the mass of maybe one or two rolls of dimes. My SWAG is that there might have been 300 of the little coins in the baggie. I hoped that he would sell the baggie for something just over melt but he quickly said he wanted 30 Pesos for each coin. That is about $2.75 each. I grabbed two. The baggie is probably still available....
I'm glad you are enjoying your coins. It looks like you got a lot of fun ones. I very much enjoyed our time at the shop and being able to talk during the drive. I'm sorry you didn't have more time so that I could have shown you other places where you can buy all kinds of silver coins for spot price or less. It is fun buying coins here in Guadalajara. Let me know when you'll be in town again.
Do you mean the bimetalic five peso coins? If not, do you have a link by which you can show me what coins you are wanting? Thanks.
