Just curious everyone. I know all of you would know better than me. I have looked at this penny for a while and I just can't tell. According to lincolncentresource.com, I would have to say it is the large date. But some things look to be the small date. What do you all think? Thought I would check the vets before I threw it in my copper pile. Hope the pictures are ok. Thanks everyone.

Large date. Go to Lincoln cent Resource, the link Shoewrecky posted above. It's a great site for Lincoln cent variety collectors, error collectors, etc etc.

That's where I looked Shoewrecky and that is why I thought it was the large date. Thanks for the reply. Just wanted to confirm what I thought with you guys.

I really wish they would have called it the "level 7" and "low 7" rather than small date. It would eliminate a TON of confusion. At least the 1960 small and large dates had an actual size difference.

Thanks Coinguy. That's where I said I went in my post. I always go there first, but like I said, I just wanted to confirm it before I put it in my copper pile. Thanks again for the confirmation.

You are right Quartertapper. It is confusing. I didn't get excited like I had the small becauseI really thought it was the large. But it is so hard to tell I just wanted other opinions before I got rid of something that was possibly somewhat rare. Thanks for your input.

Thanks a lot Shoewrecky. I see so many questions on here that people can easily find on those sites. So I try to look everywhere first.

Man, I had such a hard time seeing the difference. But I finally got a 1970 S small date proof set. I put a piece of tape over the case so I can lay another cent next to the one inside without scratching it up. Side by side, you really can see it. The height of the 7, curvature of the 9 and weakness at the top of the E R in LIBERTY. It just does what pics can't. I believe yours is a large date.

I did see a 1970 S labeled small date recently at the Las Vegas coin show. I knew it was a large date, so I passed, The dealer even told me when I looked at it that many were telling him it was mis-labeled, Go figure ?

Because of all the confusion, I purchased one certified to prevent getting burned. PCGS MS-64 RD.

Yeah, I sent pics to my friend Bill, who has posted a good number of the coins on the coppercoin site for authentication. Now I know it's a good one, so I didn't see the need to bust the case yet. Of course I may want the dime in my set eventually. lol

I have 12 1970-s pennies that I found in circulation, one of them looks like a small date but I am not sure, so can
    somebody help me tell?

Large date...look at LIBERTY, it would be faded if it was a small date. The top of the 7 is lower than the 0 which means small date.

[IMG]This is how to tell one from the other and like atrox101 said liberty will be a little faded looking on small dates
