Hey Y'all First off I'm NOT making this to offend anyone...this is just what I have thought about and think some others ought to think about too How much more money could you put into coins (Best hobby in the world) if you didn't buy... 1: cigarettes---Now let me say that I don't smoke and never will but I see that cigarettes are over $2 sometimes and if you smoke one pack a-day that comes to $730.00/year I have not looked at how much cigars cost but I bet a lot of money goes there too. 2: pop and other drinks....why not buy one liter a month instead of 2-4 liters....I do like pop but coins sure will last longer. 3: game-boys and X-box...an X-box costs around $149 (plus you have to buy a game) and you and the kids will play on it for a a year (maybe) till they make something a little better..maybe a Y-box or a Z-box 4: computer games...$10-$50--- I see a x-box game on-line for $59.99!!! have I said enough?? 5:fast food that really isn't that fast! Of course, there are plenty of other areas that we could go to but I don't want to offend you so I hope you just THINK about it and maybe you'll see what I see. This is where money goes right down the drain. Speedy
First off, I will not pay top dollar for coins, because 95% of them I resell. So, money is not the issue, it is time. Time to visit auctions and research the catalogue before hand and then go to viewings. Time to go to coin shows and learn more about coins. Time to read book and learn about history/error and other varieties so I can find real values. Time to network with dealers and other coin folks to find out who has what I want. So, if I had more time, I would get a lot more coins. Oh year, time to sell some of the coins I get so I can finance purchases of other.... You get my point. Since I am a novice, I take my time.... Best Regards, - Hal
Speedy, you must be from the South if cigs are only $2 a pack. Here in the Northeast, they run $4 - $5 a pack. So you save that dough, plus save on medical costs, and save on life insurance costs! (If I were a smoker, I'd be paying $1000 a year more for life insurance). That's a lot of coin money. Not to mention better health.
If I moved into a mobile home this month like I had hoped, instead of staying in this apartment, I could have as much as $400 a month, but I would probably only put $150 or so on coins. The upside to the trailer park: more money for fun things.
How about... Don't order the french fries (saves money, cuts down on fat consumed). Walk to wherever you are going if it is less than a mile (saves gas money, good exercise). Buy coins at auction, this way you pay what you are willing to pay.
Hey Y'all have some great points.....Now let me say that coins should not get in the way of things more important. Hal Great point---time is a great thing and we all need more of it. rbm86 I'm from the mid-south and I hadn't thought about insurance. joecoin I love coin auctions and have gotten some great coins...what about getting a small drink at the Fast food place too. Or at Wendy's you could get everything off of their .99 cents menu. Speedy
HMMMMM.... Lets see...... I guess this doesn't count for me. I spend most of my money on coins already
I don't eat out, so I can save money for coins. I drive the company car, so I can save on gas, and have more money for coins. I don't know of any local auctions, but have started looking.
Since I started collecting again my saving habits actually increased due to the fact that no one is going to buy the coins I want. So in the end I still have my little bad habits, but they have dramatically decreased in a effort to afford bigger and better coins. Oh btw a pack of smokes here in NJ is like 7-8$
