I just scored this coin for a great price!! It's my first coin struck with a missing clad layer. Now I have to get it out of that baggy and into a proper holder until I get it slabbed. Too bad the color is washed out in the pic.
That doesn't look like a missing clad layer to me. Check out mine, which incidentally has been listed in the classifieds before. It's a 1971-D and mine weighs 4.7 grams.
I haven't weighed it, but it definitely is. The pic came out terrible. I'll try for a better one when I get home. Fret, are they worth having slabbed? Are certain dates/decades more desirable than others?
Yeah, the surfaces have mostly browned, but there is still bright red outlining the head and letters. The coin does not show any wear. It has the weak strike along the outside diameter on both sides from the thin planchet. I'm thinking about getting it slabbed.
I like that since is it is copper, you can see the browning-red in the small crevices near the neck, chin, and eyes of Washington. VERY NICE COIN!
You will want to weigh it before you have it slabbed and yes, most definitely have it slabbed before selling it especially if there's no wear on it. You will get way more money and it'll be alot easier to sell for sure!! good luck!! http://www.coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/coins?main_coin=4879
The lettering and dates around the outside diameter are weakly struck on most missing clad layer coins. The reeding appears normal.
