Man, why do people spend so much money on replicas like that? If you don't mind, how much was it?

Why, Look at the 19th century restrikes! paid $160.00 now they are $185.00
Also I'm a coin collector so I collect what I like...we all have are ways.

Wow that is a lot of money (to me anyways) for a restrike.

What are the mintage numbers on an item like this?

Just a point. Re strikes are made from the original dies and from the original issuing agency (mint).

Daniels pieces are a work of art and if one enjoys collecting his art work that's all well and good. Collecting is what we all do best on this forum.

The original issuing agency didn't release this restrike of a 1823 Large Cent. Holdered by NGC and graded MS 64. Here is the Heritage description.
Here is the link for the auction. http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1151&Lot_No=3160&Lot_Id_No=196040#Photo For those where the link won't work this is lot 3160 from the 2011 January Tampa FUN Signature & Platinum Night US Coin Auction #1151

Yeah, thought about that after I hit "post quick reply". Should have left off the last part. :)

    Mea culpa.....:)

Very well said, green18! I completely agree! My only regret is that I didn't learn about these until just recently (late Feb., 2011). I was able to order one of Mr. Carr's 2009 ASE Proof Overstrikes, and am extremely happy with it. I am looking to buy one of those Peace Dollars, but so far have been outbid on ebay. Man have there values soared!!?!!

Overstruck what looks to be a 1922.

What's even more interesting is these are not the only ones listed on eBay. The others are marked accordingly, COPY.

Yes, I am wondering about the legality of the restrikes that don't have "copy" on it.

Since they are overstruck on a genuine US coin AND the mint it's self claims that NONE of the 64-D peace dollars were released for circulation and all we're destroyed it's a fantasy piece and doesn't need the word copy on it
