Below find pictures of a morgan I bought on ebay, these are the pictures provided. I will respond to this thread, and post the pictures I took. BTW, the morgan is nice, but not great.
Since no opinions are being expressed, would you care to identify the seller? My Favorite Sellers' List includes favorites for two different reasons. :smile
I agree, please post the seller. The camera can play some serious tricks.... If I sell a coin on ebay, I take pictures and use scans to avoid this type of trickery.
Looks like he is at it again.... http://cgi.ebay.com/RIM-TONED-DMPL-...ryZ39465QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I don't know what to think exactly. The picture by the seller is very good. Strong light coming from the top to highlight the frost. The coin is on dark fabric which gives it good contrast. The coin is... the coin. The biggest difference is the photography (and your flat lighting and non-castrasty enviroment). Is that bad, I'm not sure. If you light it as dramatic, it will oook as good. Flat lighting always produces flat results. I used to be one of those photography types way back in the day, and the whole point of product photography (commercial) is to make the product look good. Your car won't look as good as it does in the ad, neither will the shirt you buy. Not sure what to say.
The thing is, many DMPL coins look that good, regardless of the lighting. I feel like he gave a false impression of the coin.
I think it is, but then again I've been wrong numerous times. In his picture, there is rainbow toning on the reverse, that for some reason did show up in my picture, as I just can't get the lighting right, but it covers the exact same area as shown in his picture.
Well you have the coin in hand, all I have are the pics. But look at these areas - the U in UNITED, on the top edge of the U, in your pic, there is small upwards bump - it's not there in his pics. Look at the D in UNITED in your pic, the top serif turns upwards at an angle - in his pic the top serif of the D is at a straight 90 deg to the leg of the D. On the obverse, in your pic - directly to the right of the dot between the E and P there is a bright spot. Within that bright spot are 3 small spots that form a shape something like this -l- . It's not there in his pics. There are some other small differences as well, but those are the most noticeable to me.
Hm, you make some very interesting points. I can see what you are talking about. This guy must really be a pro photographer, or we are mistaken. After careful review I am inclined to think that it perhaps is not the same coin.
I don't think it is the same coin I do not purchase 'raw' coins on E-bay. There is, unfortunately, those who would seek to take advantage of the buyer. I understand why someone would want to buy 'raw' coins...the perception of a good deal or even better. The other side of that coin, (no pun) is the same perception by the seller of a good deal or better. I would suggest, although you will pay a premium, to buy Morgan dollars third party graded by NGC or PCGS. You will minimize having these types of issues.
I thought it wasn't the same coin until I saw the toning seemed the same in both sets of photographs.
Too my eye, and I hate to jump on band wagons, the detail of the ear is greater in the ebay photo, and that is not possible to raise with just photography. In terms of the DMPL refection, I would exprect that such an ebay photo would look like the one you got in your hand. Ruben
