I am seeing lots doubling on this 1996 P quarter but have made a lot of mistakes with doubled dies and mechanical doubling. I also marked a die crack from his chin. Please give me input so I can continue to learn the differences and make less mistakes. There are four photos here. Thank you so much.
If all of the engravings (what's it called) on the coin are doubled, then it's DD If only a small section is doubled, MD It's likely DD, as many sections of the coin are doubled
I am going to say different..It looks more like a small form of Die Detriation with Mechanical Doubling.
This is a plain old case of ejection doubling. this occurs sometimes when a coin sticks to the die and the ejection finger forces it against the letters and numbers of a die , this slides the metal of the letters and numbers and sometimes the design out of shape. on ejection doubling there will usually be a tiny ridge of metal raised up on top ot the numbers and letters in the affected area.
I'd call it 'die deterioration' a common occurrence on the Quarter shown especially on your mint mark.
