I just came across this ebay listing. http://cgi.ebay.com/PCGS-Sample-Sla...382421615QQcategoryZ41088QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I can't believe this is selling for this kind of $$? Am I missing something? I thought a PGCS Sample was just an low value ungraded coin stuck in a slab to show what the finished product looks like! Or am I wrong?
Collecting "Sample Slabs" has become really popular. They are freebies given out at shows, and are made in very limited numbers. The coin isn't the point, it's the slab.
You have to be kidding! I went to the Baltimore coin show in Dec. one dealer had several buckets of coins - all under $10, I saw several sample slabs going through those buckets. Never dreamed that people collected SLABS!
Don't be surprised nickelman, there are people that collect differently preserved (metal plated, plastic coated, etc.) cow pies, and pay good money for them. I've seen some of them hung on their owners wall in the house, if you can believe that. So, it takes all kinds and you shouldn't be surprised at anything people collect.
There is a site called www.sampleslabs.com which investigates into various varieties of slabs - except that the site seems to be down at the moment. Anything is collectable.
the above site is of a young man that is a grader for ICG---I've bought many coins from him and he is a member here....only I haven't seen him post for about 3+ years. Sample Slabs are just something else to collect IMHO---some collect books and some collect slabs--our own Conder101 researches these and also collects them. There are some Samples that are pretty rare and there might be only a few known...I think the most one ever went for was over $700. Most of the time samples are made to show changes in the slab that the Co. has made....either size of slab or lable....or color....or print on the label...just things that they have changes. Speedy
