There is a local group here trying to get a coin show off the ground. They have sent me numerous fliers trying to get our business to participate in the show. Unfortunately their very first show had 2 dealers and they were charging $5 a head to get into the show after the venue charges it's $4 for parking. If anyone had ever put a show together you know this spells doom for a coin show. I clipped a piece out of the flier that I found funny. This should be a lesson in both logic, and how to not put on a coin show. The last 2 points made me chuckle. Click to enlarge.
Yeah, even ANA shows catch grief for charging admission, anything smaller than that parking charges and admission is the kiss of doom like you said. I imagine if they could attract their "target audience" it would be a great show for them! Does their target audience exist? I spend over 10k a year on coins, but I wouldn't fit into their target audience.
Personally, I've never heard of a free coin show, or at least never been to one. But that last line about people who want to pay full value for coins is amusing. I would think people would want a deal, not make sure the dealer gets a deal. Guy
All of the local ones I have been to have been free - the show would have to be big before I would pay.
I got a free one coming up here in my area but it,s not a huge show so i dont expect To much! but if it doesnt cost anything what the heck! I,ve been to show,s before like Long Beach it,s a huge show but i,am down $45 before I even step on to the floor!
All coin shows I have attended have been free. The wespnex show I had to pay for parking, but thats it.
Philly whitman show cost me $10 to attend. One round-trip train ticket. Love that it's right across from RTM.
There is no show that I go to that has an entrance fee. I have to pay parking when I go to the Baltimore Whitman shows (about $20). And I use Amtrak and a cab when I go to the Philly Whitman show (about $100). And then there's the cost of gasoline when I go to local shows (about $5-$15).
Your ad definitely seemed to be directed to attract dealers ( sort of Freshmeat! call). It would be interesting to see what they put in the advertising for the public I bet it is worded totally different. I wonder if they have they considered "parking" or "entrance" validations, so they wouldn't have to pay the fees if they spent say $100 or more. Jim
Jim, These people can't even form a complete sentence (did you read the last point?). I'm sure they are not smart enough to do something like validating parking. They are also up against a free monthly show where the dealers average more in the $10,000 range a show. I don't expect them to be around long.
I won't pay more than $10 to get in a show , the Central States shows are free , except for parking . I would wonder about security , are they even going to have any , or are one of the organizers going to carry around a double barrel shotgun . rzage
I will never pay to get into a SHOW......How dare they...., They should pay US to get into a show, as we are the one's buying..!!! HELLO?? I am tired of the greed and arrogance of the dealer's....I don't know why, but if it were free, 500 more people would show up and buy, just my opinion....
Agree,,, I'd never pay anything to go to a show... geez, that's like paying $5 to park at wal-mart and then $10 to get inside. Who's the customer at these things ? It's totally free to sit and browse the 'bay.... and a lot more product there too.
I put on two shows a year here in Rapid City, South Dakota for my local coin club (black hills coin and stamp club) and all our shows are free. There is alot of work to put on a show and expence but to charge the public at the door will kill the show fast. At our show what we charge the dealers for tables, 100% of that money is spent for room rent, radio and TV adds, Newspaper and magazine ads and fliers. The club makes out buy signing up new members at the show. We also have a lottery for dealer table assignment so every dealer has a chance to be by the front door. This is in my opinion the only fair way to assign tables. COIN SHOWS are a lot of fun so go to one if you can.
coin shows around here are either $2 or $3 with free parking. I think this is fine. However, $4 parking and $5 entrance would probably keep me away
I was pretty upset that the Long Beach show recently increased their admission charge to $8 (plus another $10 if you need to park your car). Spending nearly $20 before you get in the door isn't a good way to bring collectors to the show!
Me too... If more buyers would call out that arrogance..... then things would change, This is the first hobby I have been involved with where that arrogance runs all the shows. Coin buyers are sheep. IMO of course! And....... it is very easy to find a little something out about those sellers. I send many messages via da Bay - there are many many many sellers who will reply. The tone and or willingness to write in reply is key. Ironically/coincidently the guy in the post above - is one of those guys I found there.
Slightly off-topic rant---- I quit going to most car shows. I have an old car, and the way they work is the antique car owner pays to show the car, and the spectators get in free. I don't understand that logic. Usually I park near the show. People can see my car, and I get to see the other cars for free. You spend time and money to build a car, and they charge you to show it?
