Please look...2003 Ark Quarter

    Any one...please help me. What is this, there is a large smooth gap on the back of head that seperates the hair. I have no idea other than it really stands out. Any one have any ideas or comments? They would be greatly appreciated.

    Well, since no one else has jumped in yet... ;)

    That is interesting looking indeed.
    I can't help you on an explanation, but you did come to the right place as someone will know what is going on.
    I am curious myself.

    Looks like an error though, as opposed to 'post-minting' damage.
    I am sure you will be asked for a closer/clearer pic though.

    Over polishing of the die will cause the gap you see.

    Yes, it may have been overpolished (abraded die) which resulted in part of the details being removed. One thing you should keep in mind is that not too much concern by Mint employees is given to maintaining high quality standards for coins that are destined for general circulation.
