    OK,
Most of us probably don't own a 1916d Mercury but I'm sure quite a few have at least a 21d or two.In my case,I own just this one and the only good things I can say about it are:
    1.It's mine
    2.It IS a 1921d
3.It has kind of cool gold/orange toning
I would love to see some of yours, and any 1916d's or 42/41's any of you might own...
looking forward to seeing those beauties!i

Sorry I never hardly take pictures of coins. Never could figure out what to do with them if I did. However, I do have 8 complete sets of Mercury Dimes except for those stupid 42/41 things. I do not consider error coins a part of a collection or the Merc Album would be a foot thick. The albums are in order of condition. the best naturally being Album #1. I started collecting well over 50 years ago so a 16D was selling back then for $1.50 in G, $2.00 in VG and up to about $10 in Uncirc. However, back then coin collecting was not a big thing and who had any money in the 40's anyway. I was a kid and bought what I could afford and that wasn't much.

The '42/'41 is not an error, it's an overdate. It was done quite intentionally by the mint because of a shortage of dies during the war. Errors happen by accident, overdates happen on purpose.

My '16D was purchased for $200 about two years ago at at fire-hall coin show. It's heavily worn, has some corrosion, and looks like its been dug up at some point. But every dealer/expert coin collector I've ever shown it to believes I got a great deal. Both the date and the mintmark are clear. In the last week I've even had a dealer offer me a good bit more than I paid for it. But right now, I couldn't afford to replace it at even that price, much less what they're going for now.

Some call it a spear and some call it an arrow. Regarless of waht it is called, I don't consider such things as part of my collection and many also feel the same. RPM's also are not an error to be technical. However, unless it's a coin that is supposed to be a coin I won't put it in my Albums. I do have 6 boxes full of 2x2's with errors or whatever someone wants to call them. But they just don't go into a set with me.
As to being jealous of a few old 16D's, you got to note you wouldn't want my age and health to go with the coins. As to the 21 and 21D I always thought they were something until another thread posted here mentioned the 31D Merc dime. As I said on that thread, I guess they are not as available as I thought.

I'm not disputing that in any way Carl. I was merely trying to point out the difference for those who don't know.

Both the 1916 and 1921 D's I have are pretty worn but still recognizable. Take a look.

Nice coins. I have 2 1916-d one AG+ the other just make G-4. The 1921 and 21d I have about 10 of each one of the 1921 has a rotated reverse. The best 21 i have is a fine. I really need to get my scanner fixed or a new one. Nice coins Moen1305 and Mikjo0.

I'm curious, what do think the rotated reverse adds to the value, I have a few of them and no idea or where to look for that information.

Probably not much unless it is an extreme rotation.

Especially for the Merc's! They are notorious for being out of alignment.

Yes the Mercury Dimes are noted for the rotation of the Reverse. I use the Whitman Classic Albums and when I first noticed the back of the page I thought I was drunk or my eyes were playing tricks on me. I would estimate that at least 25% of all my Mercury Dimes have tilted reverses. I've got a few that are almost 90 degrees off. Apparently it does not make a difference to collectors or dealers. I've tried to chew down a price of a Merc with a dealer by pointing out that his coin had a tilted reverse but they usually just smile at me knowing I know they know.
One more question about the 42/41 Merc. How dose anyone know if they are 1942 over 1941 or could they actually be a 1941 over a 1942?

There are actually a couple of different varieties for the overdate if I remember correctly. On one of them, the 1 is all but obliterated by the 2. On the other it is off to the side a little and so more easily seen. Either way, it's not really that hard to tell which number is on top of the other and in both cases the 2 is on top.

I was kidding of course. The 2 would have to be on top otherwise the Mint would have to take the 42's and go back in time to have the 41 stamped over it.

An older gentleman at work has two 42/41's that he bought years ago and I'm going to try to convince him to let me take them home for one night to photograph for you guys.I might have to let him hold my truck as collateral though. If not,I can probably do it at work.
    I'll keep you posted.

Actually that's not so. Because of the way the mint operates, it is all too possible for there to be dies in the building with different dates on them. For example, the first coins released in 1942 were actually struck in 1941. You have to remember that they start releasing coins in Jan. - that means they were struck in a previous month which would at the least be Dec. 1941. And since the fiscal year of 1941 for the mint ended in June 1941 - well, you get the idea.

So they wouldn't have to travel in time at all - they'd just have to make a mistake. And as we all know they're pretty good at that ;)
