As told to me by a bank teller this morning. There is a guy, that comes in every so often with bags of half dollars that he collects up on his travels in Europe. Apparently they are not accepted/difficult to exchange over there. He brings them in in $1000 bags. I gave the teller my number and she said she would call me the next time this guy shows up. I'm wondering if this is a bad idea. I've bought bank bags before and gotten shorted. I have also ended up with bags that contained carnival tokens the size of half dollars. Mayber there are alot of old US halves circulating in foreign countries and I could get lucky. I'm wondering if this guy is just a roll searcher who has cooked up a cover story. When I was heavy into roll searching I told tellers at my dump bank that I had gotten them from a relative who died.
Why would you need to make up a story to deposit legal tender coins at a bank? I imagine you've done quite a bit more of this than I have, but the worst I've ever gotten is good-natured eye-rolling from the tellers...
Whats funny is the teller is passing the story along...the roll searcher makes up his story to get rid of halves to the bank, and she made up a new story to another roll searcher to get rid of the halves instead of worrying about sending them off to the fed....Next you will take them to your dump bank and say you got them from a dead relative. Too funny
you can do this Fifty if the bank allows it...count it or have it weighed. weighing it may be a little off however it may give you a good guess as to how close/far away you are.. maybe the bank teller wanted your number to hook up with you some time
i cant wait to start looking through halves, i get my license in a month and im gonna find a bank that can get me some, and hopefully i can find some silver
Luck o' the draw Fifty guy. Take a chance, take a stab at it. Win or loose you may wind up with.......A bag full of carnival tokens..... Unlikely though, as I'm sure the bank personale are take a peek at what this guy is thowin' across the counter.....
+2 Check out my latest posting "Roll Searchers what do you think about this" you have inspired me for a change in how we dump our searched change! Why use a dump bank lol
Umm so is the branch manager at my bank, and she is always helping me out with my collecting needs "Hey I just got a silver fifty cent piece, you want it"
i dont see why the teller would make something up like that. now if you got burned by a bad bag of halves they should take them back. they also should have not taken the bag of carnival tokens either. i worked at a bank for many years and even if we had gotten a sealed bag eventually it would be opened or sent back to the federal reserve. once they got there hands on it they would credit the bank. if they were not what they were suppose to be the customer who brought in said coins would have there account debited for that amount. we would never take a large bag of coins from someone who didnt have an actual account at the bank. i dont know if you are in a small town or not, but where i live there is anywhere from 20-40 different branches from any particular bank(wachocvia,BofA,chase) in the county
This makes me wonder; No one ever checks halves for counterfeits(except us collectors). How much do you think the Chinese could churn these things out for? 5 Cents apiece? Sell them for 15 Cents apiece in bulk. Someone then goes to a bank and says he picks them up on trips to Europe $1000 at a time.
Somebody's got to be out there selling them at wholesale. They sell the collectable ones as real. Why not also churn out as many run of the mill ones as you can and fly under the radar.
