I recently found this 1970-s and it has strong doubling in the "Liberty" mostly in the "LIBER" and also strong on the "1970" and "s" strongest in the"197" and the "S" I tried to take the best pictures i could but my camera isnt the best! just curious if this is one of the rare 1970-s doubled die and i was also told its a small date? just curious as to what i might be able to get for this coin?
when i look through a 60x zoom there is clear doubling on all described letters/numbers! you cant see in the picture very well but the 7 has a strong double as well
yeah Mechanical Doubling will look like a DOUBLED die but unfortunately it;s not. look here: http://coinauctionshelp.com/doubledieminterror.html and do a die variety search here: www.coppercoins.com or www.lincolncentresource.com
I agree it is MDD, machine doubling damage, but it appears to be the large date variety. Take a look at this page and note the inside loop curve of the "9". Welcome to the forum! http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html Jim
Yes, it's definitely strike doubling. I prefer the term the Canadians use for this particular brand of strike doubling: die-shift doubling. Can be collectable in extreme forms, but coins like yours are very common.
I recently went through an original bag of 5,000 ( thread on the forum somewhere) and not a single small date. Did find some interesting RPM-002 and about 500 MD like yours There is a good reason the small date is much more expensive. Jim
any help knockin some cents into me would be greatly appreciated ive tried distinguishing the differences and still cant tell wich is large and small
The trouble with the high/low lines are that the photo must be flat on, and not at any angle to have a chance. But the liberty sharpness and the inner curl of the "9" shows it to be a large date. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html
One more thing. If both the date and mintmark are doubled there is an extremely high chance that it is machine doubling since the mintmark is added later in the process. Mike
