A non collector friend of mine told me( over the phone ) that he had a 1927 Double eagle with no wear. I said(with great exitement) "Check for a D or S above the date!" He said he didn't know what I was talking about. At this point my head was about to explode, seeing as this could be a million dollar coin. I finllay went over to look and it was a philly . It was still a 64 though, so it was still a nice find.BTW Nice coins. I didnt expect to see so many, especially the 1907 high reliefs!
Any Double Eagle is a great coin, regardless of the mintage. It's close to a full ounce or Gold, and they are just beautiful and are great investments. I'm lucky enough to get a common date but atleast I have one. Remember, if you have the money for a 1933 or 1927-D, snag it. But I'll go ahead and say, the rare dates are nice to own, but looking at a common date and a rare date beside each other in the same grade will both look beautiful.
Do you follow pricing closely ? What can you tell us about 1857-S prices ? If more coins are going to hit the market, collectors are wondering if they will fall in price. I believe over the last 10-12 years the price has been weak, maybe a drop in absolute terms, but mostly relative weakness compared to other Liberty DEs.
