I was recently looking through a friends coins that he had accumulated in the wash. I saw a nickel with a black tarnish. Instantly thinking war nickel, i pulled it from the pile. On closer examination, I discovered it was actually a 1955 denver, made of silver. Does anyone know if this is real?

Hmm, could you post a photo? Maybe it was silver plating, and the plating tarnished.

I'll upload a photo tomorrow, I was thinking it may be a Henning counterfeit.

OK, why do you say it was made of silver?

Only war-time nickels were made of silver

If you weigh the coin you will find your answer.

    Brilliant!

Maybe quite possibly just maybe struck on a quarter? But I doubt it

A smaller coin cant be struck on a larger planchet. A dime planchet maybe, a quarter planchet impossible.

Just because it is black doesn't necessarily mean it is silver. What does it weigh?
