It happened - I was robbed

Well after all these years, I am now on the end of the rope that many of you have been on yourself.

A few weeks ago I noticed that my bucket of pocket change had been emptied...filled with golf balls, and the a washcloth on top of the balls and change on top of that to hid the fact. After wondering who I decided that it must have been some kid in the area and that it just was a freak deal.

    (Around $200 in pocket change)

Today I walk into my local coin shop and he says that he has some new stuff - I start looking through the box and see coin after coins that were mine. I ask him about it (he knows about the pocket change story) and he tells me that one guy brought all of this in and we talked about how I hadn't noticed these missing but I would wait till I got home and checked.
Sure enought...I found several coins missing - all raw, and some paper money as well - since my good stuff is in a bank box these other coins were just stuff I picked up here and there. The best piece was a 1897-S Barber Half Dollar in AG/G. That was the one that tipped me off as it had some damage.

So anyway - I go back up and talk to the dealer and long story short, I find out who the guy was - family friend and someone I go back for years with....familys are friends, etc.

The paper money and stuff hasn't turned up, but it wasn't worth but a few bucks anyway.

(All in all, about $250 worth of coins were sold to the dealer)

I know others of you have gone through the same deal, and I now know how you feel - I'm unwilling to turn him in, cause if I was tied in with the case it would case major issues....not only with our families, but with many others (I can't go into detail)...but I have talked with the state police and we will see if there is anything that can be done.

The sad part is - if he had asked, I would have been glad to give him some money...

The good part is - I'm going to repay the dealer for what he spent and I will be getting what coins are left back.

Anyway - just wanted to let you guys know - I'm still alive and well....work and school take up way to much of my time and I do miss being here.

Sorry to hear that, Speedy. One thing you will probably learn in life is that you can count the number of your true friends on one hand and probably have a finger or two left over.

I am also sorry to hear that Speedy. Even if it isn't worth a million bucks, it still must hurt to have a part of your collection stolen. :(

Sorry about what happened! It's sad to know that a close friend turns out to later be an enemy. :(

Sorry to hear of your recent losses. But, I'm glad to hear you gan get most of it back. I'm even more glad you know who did it, so you can hopefully prevent it happening again. I can't even begin to immagine how I'd feel if someone stole part (or all) of my prized collection.

    Schatzy -
I'm guessing this never happened to you..? Ya know, drugs and stuff can make people do the weird stuff - and believe it or not, I'm not mad at this guy - he needs help, and I'm going to try to get him some....but when stuff like this happens, some of it might be black and white, but in alot of cases, there is a large gray area....and that gray area, is what is hard to deal with, and know how to act on. While many will most likely disagree with the steps I'm taking, I feel sure that I'm doing the right thing.

I think Doug had a deal like this happen to him as well a few years back, and it seems to me that he reacted in some of the same way.

    Freaky -
Yeah, but in another way, it makes me see that maybe I had/have too much - with work and school I don't have much time anymore for stuff like coins, golf, etc, and maybe it is time to sell part of the odd stuff.

Chris - yes...in a way thats true, but I have been blessed with many friends and I think I could say, and be truthful, that if I see this guy tomorrow....I don't know if I would call him friend...but I would still be able to be nice to him and this will never come up. If he ever wants to bring it up, he will find that he is forgiven, and that I'll be the first one to try and find him help.

Piece of advice; get a lock and talk to a cop. If you suspect drugs, be sure you talk to the cops.

I did. I talked with a retired state officer who is also our retired local sheriff...he knows everyone involved and we talked about what to do for some time. That was when I talked with state police, and because of some issues, that is why we stopped short of filing a report on this. I know its hard for some of ya'll to understand, but you will just have to take my word on it.

Hopefully....as it looks now, there will be something done about the drug issue, without bringing this whole thing into the light at all.

Bummed to hear this, Speedy! I'd rather be robbed by a complete stranger than someone I know.

sorry to hear about the loss, I understand not wanting to bring the police in for just a few hundred dollars, chalk it up to a cheap lesson about that persons character, better to have it cost you a few hundred to find out his lack of integrity rather than big money. .

I can understand forgiving him, and getting him help and all but not before I broke his jaw and chocked him unconscious

Also sorry for your loss and betrayal

You are a lot more optimistic than I would be when drugs are in it.

Actually I have had this happen but a little different way.
I had one of my employees steal $2634 from the company.
The owner and I decided not to fire the guy and he started
to pay us back. A few months later we found out his truck
was up for repo and he told us after he got it taken. I
went down and paid $950 to gets his truck out so he could
go back to work. 6 months later we find out that he cashed
14 of our customers checks for over $10k. He worked for us
for over 4 years so he was also like family but we had to
turn him in this time. He is now sitting in jail.
He had a drug problem but he doesn't anymore!!

As I already learned you are no helping him.....how are going
to feel when he does it to someone else you know!!

Ouch, that has to really hurt.

Other people can sat what they want about "he wasn't really a friend", but you're turning out to be a much better friend than he could ever have expected. I don't know if I believe in karma as an actual universal principle, but I certainly hope that what you're doing here comes back manyfold to you and yours. And I hope he can get the help he needs, above and beyond the help you're already providing.

  20. Sorry to hear that this happened to you Speedy. Sounds like a tough situation. Hope the person gets the help he needs and that you and your possessions stay safe. TC

Speedy, you've certainly earned my respect for the way you are handling this, but please, keep one thing in mind. It is a very, very rare occasion when you can help someone who has a drug or alcohol problem. The only person who can really help them is they, themselves. Oftentimes, they will turn on you for doing it to them, and it is only the few "success stories" who will be thankful.
