    Hi
Have a question concerning a 1878 silver dollar. I was going thru some items when i came across several silver dollars that i was given approx 20 yrs ago. My question is on the word dollar the bottom portion of the d is missing and doesn't connect to the bottom of the d if that makes any sense. just curious as to what would cause this. Sorry about the scans but don't have access to a camera. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

It's hard to tell from that photo. I'm blind, so I'd have to see better close-ups. Some of the leaves of the olive branch appear to be obliterated, too, but the overall condition of the coin doesn't suggest wear.

The D looks like it might have been partially filled with debris or maybe grease in the die. That might explain other weak areas as well.
