Has anyone here ever recieved a half-dollar, dollar-coin, or $2 bill in their change without asking for it? Did the cashier ask if it you wanted it, or did he/she just give it to you? I've never.

My son gets some $2's managing the pitch n' putt during the summer and saves them for me. I've gotten a couple in very nice condition.

Only one place has ever gave me them in change it was my local coin shop. He does it to keep them flowing in circulation.

I get $2 bills in change every time we eat at Ted's Montana Grill. They have a thing for the 2s there.

There is only one business in my town, a bar that I visit infrequently, where customers are regularly given halves in change. A $2.50 bottle of beer will get you a 50¢ piece in return. We get halves, dollar coins, and $2 bills at my work every so often, but my coworkers will leave them in the cash register, almost avoiding them all together as if no one wants them. We had three $2 bills in the register last Wednesday, so someone is spending them.

    But.....

Lately I've been asking for $40-$50 in Sacs and SBAs when I deposit my pay check. I'll carry 5 or 10 of them with me when I leave in the morning for work, and I'll spend them throughout the day. Sometimes people are excited to take them, other times I get no reaction at all.

According to the $2 bill article on Wikipedia.com, the Monticello (Thomas Jefferson's house) 's Gift shop gives $2s as change.

My cousin said she'd like a $2 bill, so I stopped off at the bank, but they were out. The Teller looked so hard too... "Not at my station... (she looks over to one out of seven stations): Do you have a $2?"
    "No,"
    "Sorry, hon."

I have a small hoard of eight, but wasn't willing to part.

I have never tried, but you should be able to order $2 bills from the bank, just like you do halves.

At a local bank near me every time I go there and ask for things like that they give me all I want. I usually get about 4 rolls of halves, 5-$2 bills and at least 5 of the large Ike Dollars. I don't know how many places have told me they don't want the halves but it's been a lot. At stores I've been asked if the $2 bills were for real and they would really not like for me to use them. The Old Ikes go over really big. Any where I spend them I see people putting them aside for themselves later. The little baby dollar coins are a real no-no with stores also. However, even though I do this all the time it's odd that I never remember ever in the last 20 years getting stuff like that back in change except the lousey little dollars which I've gotten as a quarter. At one store they explained to me that the problem was no place in the cash drawer for that stuff. Same on commuter trains where the conductors have coin changers that have no place for that stuff either.

What?! No $2 tray?! You'd think all cash registeres would have a $2 tray *wink*
Sacs? I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Only spent a sac once at Target, she didn't look twice; she knew what it was.

The only time I've ever received any of these without asking for it from qa cashier was about 20 years ago at a coin store where I received a 1953 red seal $2 bill in change. I'm pretty sure either the cashier (who was also the store owner) was either being generous, or he simply just put any of his older paper money not worth more significantly more than face value into the till (which I guess makes sense, you have a $2 bill sitting around that nobody is interested in buying, may as well just treat it as spending money).

I do receive Sacagaweas and SBAs as change from post office vending machines, and on ocassion light rail ticket machines, but besides the exception I mentioned above, I've neever had an actual human being give me half dollars or dollar coins unless I specifically request them (which I often do if I see any in the drawer).

I remember when I worked at 7-11, we kept a $2 bill at the bottom of the $1 bills and recorded its serial number, so if we were robbed it would be easy to indentify our money. Though robberies of chain coveneince stores are rare nowadays since you wouldn't get more than about $30 out of it. However, there are still stupid criminals out there, so pays to be safe.

Last time I got a dollar coin in change was from the post office stamp machine......all 17 of them :)

Half dollars I average maybe one a month, that's not including halfs back from coin dealers.

My son received 3, $5.00 Silver certificates, dated 1934, but I forget which Series, in change from the local MacDonalds.
I told him to go back and get more.
