I seen the last one in 1958. Got it in change at the Beer Depot. The owner knew me, I was on my bicycle getting a pack of cigarettes for my Mom with her note. Danged if she didn't wanted her quarter back.
Grew up in the 70's and have never seen one in circulation! In fact the first one I have ever held in my hands was a couple weeks ago when I bought one off Ebay... Was the seller the very old man who lived on the last house on the right stealing our Silver Standing Liberties out of circulation? Who knows? However, I know that I paid way to much for it! Read the "Why no Silver in pocket change" Thread a few days ago...
bout 12 years ago now my Mom got 2 at a local bingo game. the old man next to her brought them in to buy candy! wish he had had more cuz he wouldn't take more than 50 cents for the pair..... actually one of the shining moments that got me started....
I worked in a small gracery store in the mid 60's and we would occasionally get them. Of course almost all the dimes, quarters and half dollars were 90% silver. If I had only known then what I know now.
There were plenty around in the early 1950's when I started collecting (along with the occasional Barber)... but they were pretty much gone by the late 50's.
When I had a paper route I could find them as payment. That was about 1960. I still have a couple of them.
Never, haven't found silver quarter (Washington) in about 15 years. I haven't roll searched quarters in a while but occassionally I could get them in change.
ThanX ronterry~I would have a lot more except the evicted exotic dancer I put up between wives spent a few jars I'd set aside of my stash on smokes. Mistakes happen.:hail:
I just went through a couple of envelopes and found 35 standing liberty's ..two are Variety 1 which has no stars below the eagle..one the date is gone but they were only made in 1916 & 1917 the other Var 1 is a 1917. I know I have many more but the inventory job and grading is massive.
LMAO. I've never seen one in circulation. Once in a scant blue moon I'll hear of someone finding one while roll searching. I never have, and I've searched thousands $$ of rolls.
