I agree with this 100%. Seriously, popularity is more important on all collectables. According to the 2011 Red Book a G-4 1909S-VDB is $850 which is double the price for most varieties of large cent between 1794 and 1796 (Liberty Cap type). Why? I propose it is because there are thousands of people who collect Lincoln cents and have a book with an empty hole for the Lincoln so it is more popular than the older coin. Is it more rare? Ancients that come to mind with inflated price due to being more popular than rare are Tribute Pennies and Widow's Mites.
I'm still surprised when I see the price of junky coins of Caligula, or even Nero. Tiberius Tribute penny= p-8 Unique denarius Julia Domna= p-1 Athenian Tetradrachm= p-7
I havent posted in this thread because I dont own a single Sesterii, but on the subject of popularity & common, throw in the Alexander iii Tet.
Funny you mention the 1909-s VDB, this thread was posted today on CU and it just floors me how many folks own one, http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=807624 And I have no desire for one whatsoever. I find lincolns boring as hell. If one fell into my lap I would sell it quickly.
I'd sell it too if I found one...... and buy an athenian, and Alexander III tet. edit: just wanted to add, the only problem I have with popular coins is the price.
