I am new at this and don't laugh too hard at me, I know this penny likely has no value but it looks "yellow" and feels rough around the edges. My scans don't really show how "yellow" it is. Does any one have any ideas? I am not a collector and know nothing about coins but find this one odd and would like to know more about it.
Oh, and it remains very shiny although I haven't cleaned it, and its been in a jar of coins for years.
I remeber reading online that sometimes the Zinc to copper ratio can be off in certain areas during production process thus resulting in a "Brass" coin. Though this doesn't really look like it from the scans. Also exposing the coin to high intensity UV light isn't that good for the surface however, due to the large scratches I don't think it would effect the value
There is a science experiment to turn a penny to gold. soaking it in certain chemicals can make the metals in the penny turn a gold color. I haven't tested this experiment so i'm not sure if it really works but it seems do able maybe somone tried it with this coin. I'm not a expert on coins so this is just my guess hope it helps
Beanz I thought that only worked with Post 1982 pennies because the underlayer of zinc melts as well as the top to create a brass like appearance am I wrong?? hobo would know
ikandiggit, look at the penny in the video it's 2007 I have never seen this experiment work with a pre 1982 However I guess it is feasible as the goal is to add a top layer of zinc and melt it just enough to where it fuses with the copper layer

http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-turn-pennies-into-silver-and-gold-coins-with-zinc-367856/ This one answers my question as he is using 1979 Canadian Pennies for the trick they had a high cu copper content at that time. In fact Canada waited until 1992 to switch to steel plated with copper
Copper coins have been "turned to gold" for decades. When I did this when I was a kid, all the pennies were copper.
