I collect coins because I enjoy having, what I think, are miniature pieces of art. When I go to a musuem it's nice to see the great paintings they have but it's something that I'm not able to have at home. However with coins I can find/buy them for a lot lower cost. I can touch them, with gloves of course, I can share them with friends, and I can view them anytime I want
I really only have two answers for the question. One reason I collect is because I love the hobby art and history and it keeps me out of trouble.
Like I tell my wife when she rolls her eyes at my collecting fervor, what better thing to collect with a passion than money?! Most my friends spend it while I collect and hoard it.
I don't have a particular reason, but I do enjoy filling up "empty" spaces in my home with parts from my collection.
I collect for the beauty and history. And because it takes my mind off stuff. And because I just find it cool that there are so many different types and varieties and what not. So, D-All of the above.
Lol! This sums up why I collect as well. Taking pictures is one of my favorite parts of collecting. It is a great way to releive stress for me, somehow. :| ps. I have purchased a few coins from your site and I love them!
being a history and geography nut, i collect coins as a major part of my interests in these subjects, and quite simply because i love collecting
In no particular order: 1) It's mentally stimulating 2) I like learning 3) I like goals that I complete, like completing a set 4) I like assets 5) I like something that has its roots from my childhood 6) I like organizing and using spreadsheets/computer 7) Keeps me out of Best Buy 8) Keeps me busy when relaxing after work 9) Gives me something in common with a forum like this 10) fodder for my kids and wife to make fun of me
I can relate to pretty much every reason given so far. I have to add one other thing that can add to the enjoyment of collecting. I just imagine where the coin has been, what it has purchased, who has handled it...maybe someone famous? That's one reason why a person might collect circulated coins, versus high grade ones that probably sat in bank vaults for decades until the silver craze of the 60's brought them out of hibernation.
I love to look at a coin and think about the things it might have bought and the history it has been through. Seems like I learn something about coins almost every day. That and they have a timeless beauty that can't compare to anything else. I like looking at a coin and thinking that my Great grandfather might have had it in his pocket when my grandfather was born. I guess it's the history of the coins that intrigues me the most.
Thanks gbroke. Coin collecting is just fun and I love to hold nice pieces and imagine what it was like living at that particular time and so on.... Kinda' start day dreaming....LOL
I collect because I mostly love the history but I also collect because it's relaxing & I like the thrill of the hunt.
I have always loved looking in antique shops, I stopped in one and saw a bin of 10 cent World Coins bin / 11 for a dollar! I picked out 11 that looked real cool. When I got home I looked them up and some were worth as much as ten bucks. From there the seeds took root!!! I have been able to find plenty of great foreign coins for next to nothing, the best I keep for my collection, the rest I sell and profit enough to keep my hobby alive.
I collect coins for an array of reasons, while it does make me happy, I'd like to pass history down to my children. I also enjoy getting my fingers dirty going through rolls of pennies and dimes etc. More importantly it's fun
