just wondering what people think of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Cook-Islands-...514686189&po=&ps=63&clkid=7334014510737663048 i presume they are collector only pieces and not circulating. in my opinion they are not coins and they are soley to make a profit. also, correct me if im wrong, but did canada once use hologram in a coin?
this has always been my gripe, certain countries produce so much uncirculating legal tender crap every year just to make a fast buck, i would never buy any of them.
I don't collect too many foreigh coins, but why should these be regarded any less than some of the crummy commems issued by the US Mint? At least it has a lower mintage than all of the them. Chris
that is a good point but not being a us collector then i couldnt really comment. it is just the gimmick factor that got me
I don't know if Canada issued a holographic coin or not. I can only recall that they issued some sort of coin with a central device in red. Chris
If my memory serves me correctly, the Cook Islands make a wkole lot of non-circulating legal tender coins. Is that the only thing they make?
just did a quick google search and found a lot of the same kind of thing. this one although it is not a coin IMHO. is beautiful artistically
found a whole site with some ridiculous stuff from arouns the world http://funnypagenet.com/the-most-unusual-coins-from-all-over-the-world/ just a warning to moneyer12 i know how irrate you got at the guitar shaped coins so i would suggest you not look on this site as it may make your head explode lol
Why do you say it isn't a coin? It has a stated denomination. Is there a date on the other side and a country of issue? Chris
because it is not a circulating coin there were only 50 minted. i suppose though that it would technically be leagal tender though. "coin-a piece of metal stamped and issued by the authority of a government for use as money. " if it was made with no intention that it was going to be spent then i dont think it counts as a coin. nether the less the more i look at that 50 dollar coin the more i want it
Then you should throw all of your proof sets, mint sets, commems, silver eagles, gold eagles, platinum eagles and palladium eagles in the trash. Better yet, send them to me and I'll dispose of them for you. Chris
They shouldn't be reguarded any less. The US NCLT's are garbage as well. I did better than that! I never bothered wasting money on them and spent my money on real coins instead.
theoretically proof coins are circulating leagal tender coins, i have found one or two in my change over the years, so really the argument that proof coins fall into the same category as crap like the one calum posted is a non starter.........
You can cut down this "coin" all you want. The sad truth is that artistically, it beats almost all modern commems produced in the United States. Have all the good artists in this country taken up factory work or what?
Well, yes, it is a coin in the sense that it has a face value and was authorized by the local government. NCLT = non-circulating legal tender sounds about right as a term for such pieces. Mintage was 500 by the way. Not that it makes a huge difference. Christian
now that is what i call a beautiful coin, and it was a circulation piece. this photo was borrowed, but my first example of this coin was in my change for 3 ice creams at of all places mont san michel.
This just in................Countries, especially small nothing countries who have no other income sources, are no longer allowed to "make a fast buck". Back to the thread.
