I just recently acquired this 1902 O Rainbow Toned Morgan. This is my first toned coin. I would like to know what the community thinks. I am new here, but have been reading the site for quite some time. I tend to be picky about the morgans I get. I try to get ones that come from original rolls or about as close to uncirculated as possible. I think this morgan is a rather dark tone from ones I have seen, though I am not an expert in morgans. I would like to learn all I can. Thanks much.
Welcome to the neighborhood! I'm originally from Rockville, but I've been in SWFLA since 1978. If left in the original environment which allowed this coin to tone, it would have become much darker and eventually turned black. Chris
ah, ok. Well either way that is good to know. What would be the original environment? Inside the roll itself not taken out?
Most Morgans were stored in $1K bags in the Treasury vaults for decades. It wasn't until the releases of the 60's & 70's that most of them even saw the light of day. Some toned vibrant, rainbow colors in the bags. Other were removed to tone in albums and Kraft envelopes. I can't say what may have caused this particular Morgan to tone, but there may be others who could. Chris
It looks like album toning to me. But that big gouge in the forehead should keep it from being slabbed. Pretty coin though.
1902 O Rainbow Toned Moegan I wasn't sure if the gouge mark was made by other coins over the years or just improper care. The coin did come from a private collection that was handed down since the Morgans were first minted in 1878. That much I do know. Even that could be a fib as one never knows. But I like to try to get the history and story ( if there is one ) behind each morgan I get. Thank you all for your responses. It helped a great deal.
