Hi all...I am not a big collector of toned coins, but I got my hands on a late 80's early 90's Dansco where some of the coins had some great color. Key question...how do coins as new as 91-92 get such great color? Is it artificial? Did the album or environment have a larger impact? Take a peek at the photos and let me know your thoughts (other than my toned coin photo skills need work). I really like the gold toned 77P...looks great in person (too bad the shield has the slide). I took pictures with it next to a BU coin so you could see the photos were not doctored up in software.
Nice. I've found lots of clad toners but only a handful of silver ones. Most of the silver ones I find are either shiny or tarnished.
So what makes some coins tone so quickly....I am not used to seeing a 91 Proof with the toning that exists like above. I am thinking the way the coins were put into the Dansco (fingers, gloves, whatever) had something on it, and then the storage of the Dansco caused that to tone. Many of the coins have toning that is starting in the middle of the coin...I am used to album toning starting on the edge. Looks like the person may have pushed the coins into the Dansco slots by pressing on the center of the coin.
Also...since I do not do a lot of toned coins, I have not learned to grade through toning very well....does unattractive toning impact the grade a coin receives, or is the grade focused on the condition of the surfaces and not the color. The 87 coin in the original post has some unattractive spots in the toning, but the coin is pretty clean. Any grade input (thoughts, ideas, grade estimates) would be appreciated.
Those are nice looking. I collect Kennedy Toners as well. They can tone very quickly in some cases. Temperature and humidity are major factors in the speed of toning. Cameo Coins can quickly get the blue hazing. Generally I believe gold toning is directly related to heat exposure. A warm storage area such as an attic can quickly turn these gold. On the same note...some may never tone.
Thank you for the input. I am learning on this toning thing...previous collection is all brilliant, or as someone stated earlier, tarnished. I am starting to enjoy some of the colors and impacts to the coins. Have read on the debate between AT and NT, but nowhere near knowledgeable enough to tell them apart.
