physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

"Speed up" toning is code-speak for "artificially tone" - or at the very least enhanced toning. This is a grey area, but the best toning is what happens naturally.

    Different albums tone differently.

ok well its not artificially toning, the silver has a chemical reaction whenever toning happens. I am not throwing them in my oven or using a battery to chemically enhance them.AT is when the toning happens within seconds in my opinion. And if you seen my collection you would know that I dont monkey with AT.Some of these coins will probably sit in this whitman ten years before they take on the colors I desire. thanks for your concern though:high5:

If you know which side takes on the toning please lettme know. thanks:D

Believe me, I too know all about toning.

Newer Whitman albums probably will not tone as well or as fast. You need albums from teh 60's that had sulfur in them. Wayte Raymond albums are the best. Library of Coins albums work well also. Certain Dansco's tone as well (older ones). The area of the coin toned will vary based on how the coin is held, what its up against, air flow through the album, shape of the pages, etc.

Generally, classic "album toning" is not on any particular side, but is around the edges of both sides, due to the way the cardboard contacts the edges of the coins.

I have a really nice barber that is beautiful on the reverse and plain on the front just wanted to get the other side of it without jacking up the pretty side

I've had coins in Whitman folders that have resided there for well over 50 years that have no toning, so I don't know. However, I have some nickels that I put in a Harris folder that completely toned in two years, and these were uncirculated coins.

This toning thing really messes me up. Some people want and others don't, or at least not pay a premium for. Some procedures talk about the negative impact of toning and some threads like this talk about the positive aspects of it. I know there is no specific answer and it's in the eyes of the beholder.

I have seen some beautiful examples of toning, but I can't come to grips with paying X+toning premium.

    Oh well, time for bed.

I dont plan on selling any of my dimes, I will pay way more for toning I like but there are some ridiculous prices on some that even I laugh at. I mean seriously this coin is listed at 20X the list price

Actually, 20X bid is not that much when bid is only $25. The lower the wholesale price, the higher the bid multiple given the same toning. I have actually seen common date MS64 Morgan Dollars sell for over $5,000.

On a side note, I clicked on your link and immediately recognized the photographic style of seller but did not recognize the seller's name. The website design and layout also looked familiar. Yes everybody, it is good old Brandon Kelley formerly of Anaconda and Polaris Rare Coins on the Jhon E Cash team. Brandon is an outstanding coin photographer and a very customer service oriented dealer. Based on the price of that Mercury Dime, maybe he still thinks he works for Anaconda.:D

Check out the Jhon E Cash website, they have some pretty cool coins and notes.

Do a search on my posts. I have done many posts including some threads about coin photography. If you are really serious about coin photography, I suggest picking up a copy of Mark Goodman's book NUMISMATIC PHOTOGRAPHY. It is the best book on the subject and he is one of the very best coin photographers in the business

Actually, that coin was a consignment and I couldn't do a thing about the price. Pretty coin though.

    Brandon,

The E-Bay link to that coin is gone. Can you post your photo of it in this thread?

That is one old picture. I would have to dig it out of some deep archives. I'm pretty sure that Dave Albanese had it listed for awhile. The consignor sent it to them after I had it listed. Nope, will have to dig through the network drive. I might be able to find it later though.
