Hey coin talkers! I just wanted a couple of opinions on which of these silver certs. i should purchase. I was think the $5 Porthole Lincoln id get in F12 and if i were to get a $5 Educational id get in the range of VG08-VG10. Ok guys, which one is doing better in the market right now or which one do you all think is one that is cooler piece to have. Ill give my personal opinion; I'm leading more towards the Porthole Lincoln
The Educational is a lot more attractive, but the Porthole is a lot more unusual and off the beaten path collecting wise. The market is fairly saturated with Educationals from grades of AWFUL-01 on up to CU-67 or so. As for the Porthole, value wise I think it is the better value for appreciation than the Educational - though that nekkid lady is fairly tempting to buy all the while.
hahaha! yes, nekkid women make it very, very unusual aswell and yes, TEMPTING! Alright...Thanks alot for all of your help since you are the only one who as replied as of now. Lets maybe see a couple more opinions till I make the purchase, though your opinion is very rational.
Both great notes. I think I would go with the educational. But I guess I have wanted one for a longer time.
I think the Educational series has alot more going for it as far as popularity and future Investment.
I like the porthole, but most people would go after the educational note, so you might get a better return on that. Plus, the $5 educational is one of the greatest notes ever printed (in my opinion), so I'd go with that!
I'd go with the Porthole Lincoln. They are much more rare, and depending on condition can bring a pretty penny ( or few ) there is a dealer I know of who often has these Lincoln Portholes come up for auction, from Good condition to Uncirculated. Just depends on how much it is worth to you personally, secondly as a resale item for the future. Just my opinion.
I will defend my support of the Porthole with it being a bit off the beaten path. Sometimes I favour those areas rather than the well worn parts of collecting.
YES! and that is one of the reasons I admire the Porthole Lincoln so much; Its difference from the rest of the notes of its time
The moderator, Peter, will laugh silly, because he and myself heartily debated about the merits of Lincoln many years ago - but I have evolved to have a critically positive viewpoint of the man that transcends into numismatics. He is the only figure with whom I actively collect whatever I can find numismatically, the 1918 Illinois half, the Fractional 50 cent note, the early cents, the commems from 2009 etc. I want a really nice, has to be crisp uncirculated Porthole for it's unusual appearance, it's subject, and it's relatively short tenure of usage.
I agree that the porthole is a great note, especially since you can get it in a better condition. I just think that due to the prominance of the educational note that you may get more in the long run. It books for the same $$ as the porthole in that condition.
Well then, so many conflicting answers I'm debating whether I should just go ahead and BUY BOTH.......
with spending that kind of money and asking about resale here i would think you would have a program called track and price it not only lets you catalog your notes but it will show just how that note has done on e-bay in the past yr it can give you a better handel at knowing if what your paying is a good price or not
I do not know of either banknote so how about an educated porthole? I was curious and just looked them both up. Thats alot of money for a banknote first off. If I had that kind of money for 1 I would pick the Porthole. It seems very different and the Blue is very beautiful.
Oh yes! Ive heard of this. Im not sure if it is the right thing for me though. This is most likely going to be a "one-time-only" sort of buy. I dont usually spend this much on a single note. THANKS FOR THE USEFUL INFORMATION THOUGH
Haha! Very convincing reply. Yes, blue is attractive.......And yes, it is a very unusual look for its time period.
