My friend works for the Royal Mint and can reserve some commemorative coins for the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. I will be purchasing some for my own personal collection but was wondering if it was worth buying bulk to make a quick profit? I understand there will be 250,000 £5 coins and 50,000 silver proof £5 coins produced. prince_william.jpg

I think it's going to depend on the designs of the coins and the cost. Too early to tell IMO.

Seems that the mint will sell six different versions. Prices go from £9.99 (Cu-Ni) to £5450.00 (platinum). No idea about what "quick profit" can be made ...

perhaps he means by selling them to non collectors as a keepsake of the wedding? personally if it wasn't just to continue my UK collection, i don't think i would buy one.

Guess I will not buy one. But yes, I am pretty sure that this coin will be more popular (if "only" as a souvenir) than, say, the Prince Charles £5 coin (2008). It's the possible profit part that I have some doubts about ...

But probably not as popular as the Charles and Diana Wedding coins were, and the market dropped out of those as well. As a quick flip they may do OK, but I wouldn't count on them being anything long term.

I am interested in getting one of the cheaper ones for a keepsake. If anyone gets the low down on where I can get one let me know!!!

You might want to wait for the "Royal Divorce" coins in a year or two.

I'm not a fan of the design, so I don't think they'll have long-term aesthetic demand.

If past history is any guide, the popularity of the bride is probably at an all-time high now.

I would take a gamble and purchase a few sets for " Resale " purposes . I'm still sitting on about 2 dozen " Diana " Commemoratives .

It's not what I would call quick profit though

I loved the 'enchantment' of Diana, so purchased some of those myself. I don't particularly feel they are valuable, but rather sentimental; reminiscent of a different time in life. William and Kate? Nah, not the same. No interest here.

She was an ICON . I actually had the wonderful experience of actually meeting " Diana " in person at a small Soiree in Dallas , Texas . I cried like a baby that fateful evening . Such a tragedy .

The "new" design looks like two zombies about to attack each other.

although i am a very proud english man, i have no time whatsoever for the royals, i wish that we could live in a republic where we could elect our head of state and get rid of them is we are not satisfied with them. i declined the offer to meet diana when she visited my previous work place as it would be hypocritical of me to kowtow to a royal when i am a confirmed republican.
