Hi Guys Im new here i am in search of some information on my gold coin From the markings on the coin it is a 5 Dollar 1849 California Gold Piece that is all i know... i have spoke to collectors and never received an answer about it i have looked in books and never found a similar coin i am lost i would like to know what in the coin world the name of the coin is and a little of its history ... a estimated value range would be great also i have some pictures of it.. i know they are not great but any help would greatly be appreciated thanks in advance Crazy:thumb:
That is a very cool piece. It is a Five Dollar Gold Piece struck by Moffat & Co. It is listed in the Red Book in the 'PRIVATE and TERRITORIAL GOLD' section. The value could be $1,500 or more (depending on condition). If I were you I would send the coin to PCGS or NGC and have it authenticated and graded. What makes this piece even more interesting is the following (from the Red Book): So the company that struck your piece went on to become the San Francisco Mint. That's pretty cool.
It's a privately minted $5 gold coin. They're worth about $1800 and up.. way up depending on condition. I can't tell if that's genuine, but if it is (It needs to be slabbed by PCGS or NGC) I'd say it looks like an XF or so from here, probable value range $3-4,000. Again, it does need to be professionally graded, lots of fakes exist.
hey guys thanks for the info and a fast response..hobo thanks for the info that is real neat to find out the coin was found in the foothills of California....that was 20 years ago and this is the first solid info i have received thanks guys!! I will look into the pcgs and ngc the coin does have some wear but hey i found it in the mud lol!!
By all means Crazy-Wolfe send it to PCGS or NGC for authentication. Like rid14 says there are a lot of fakes, but this one looks good to me. It's worth the cost of sending it to a TPG to have it graded. We're talking about a value of 2 grand, give or take, so do it. And...Welcome to C/T, it's good to have you here. Bruce
If you dug that coin, chances are VERY good that it's legit. Assuming that you didn't clean it with anything that would damage the surfaces, you might have a $4,000 coin there, NICE! That's like pulling a Rolex submariner out of the ground Grading fees are a tough call, I'd almost want to see better pics to get an idea of what it would likely grade... I use PCGS, the value cutoff for regular is $3,000 but that coin could be worth more.. insuring it for $4,000 would raise it to being graded at the express level but that's only an extra $20 and the coin will be graded within 5 vs 15 business days for regular. Grading fees are $30 regular and $50 express. Regular tier is 15 days, express is 5 days. There's a $8 fee per submission regardless of how many coins you submit and shipping both ways is extra. You should mail it USPS registered mail with insurance. If you only have one coin to submit, my strong suggestion is to submit the coin through an authorized dealer, this way you can jump in on one of their submissions and save paying $39 and up to join the collectors club. Personally I'd contact the folks at Kagins (I think it's kagins.com) as they are the big player in territorial and privately minted gold coins. They're also PCGS and NGC authorized dealers I would think. The owner of the company basically wrote "The book" on coins like yours. Whatever you do, it's a very special coin that you found and quite a chunk of history.
Nice!!! I seen some crazy $$$$$$ pay for anything to due with the 1849 gold rush.if it get graded and is placed in the right auction you could make a few $$$$$$
