    Very new to coins let alone the abbreviations you guys use on a regular basis.

    Could you guys and gals maybe start a list of abbreviations and their meaning to help me get caught up?

    Thanks

    Welcome to Coin Talk! That's not a bad idea, though I don't know how to go about it. This list will not include all the abbreviations you see here, but it's a good start:

    Hi newcoinguy,

    Welcome to the forums. There are a lot of abbreviations used on this site. I think there is a post somewhere that describes a lot of the abbreviations. I know the one that most people get confused about is PMD which means Post Mint Damage

    As far as the coin grading letters, here is the list as follows;
    PR=Poor
    AG=About Good
    G=Good
    VG=Very Good
    F=Fine
    VF=Very Fine
    XF (or EF)=Extremely Fine
    AU=About Uncirculated
    MS (or UNC)=Uncirculated
    PF=Proof

    Hope this helps.

    every little bit helps, thank you. So pretty much the only abbreviations used are for greding a coin?

    Well, when you see those that I listed, those are all the abbreviations for the grades of coins.

    Other abbreviations are used just to keep typing in the forum shorter.

    TPG=Third Party Grading (Slab companies who grade coins like PCGS, NGC, ANACS)
    AT=Artificial Toning

    Also a found a quarter with a very small hole through the center of it why was the hole there? Have you ever seen a quarter with a hole through it?

    A slab is a plastic sealed container containing a coin that they then authenticate and grade. Most US coinage in nicer condition is found in slabs. Check out the website for PCGS, a top slabbing company in the coin world. PCGS Website

    The quarter with a hole in it is probably damage done to the coin after it was struck by the mint. No US coinage was made with a hole at the mint.

    Welcome newcoinguy. Instead of us trying to compile a complete list of coin acronyms and terminology and post it in this thread, it would probably make more sense to ask what something means when it appears in a thread.

    But the lingo list jallengomez provided is a great source.
