Can someone provide a link that shows this coin type without the countermarks? 25mm 9.81g Failing that, do I have the right sides up?

I found an uncountermarked coin on vcoins. I understand the idea of countermarking to revalue but does this have VIII and 8 both stamped on what started as a coin of 8 Maravedis (using two sided c/m's in each case?)? What was the effect of adding the marks?

There are different date countermarks associated with the numerals on your coin - it was revalued as VIII Marevedis in 1602, it was again declared valued at 8 Marevedis in 1612. (Actual dates may vary!) Essentially, the marks are assuring that it is STILL worth eight. I'm fairly sure that there are others marked with VI or 6.

For examle: 8 maravedis 1618 with countermark "8" and "normal" cipher 'VIII".

When was the host coin struck? The uncountermarked cob I found on VCoins appeared to be dated 1624 well after the two dates you quote so I assumed my host was in that ballpark rather than pre 1602. I looked for it just now but it was gone so I can't post it.

I wasn't quoting the actual dates on your coin. What I read as 1612 could well be 1642. With the coin in hand, you have a great advantage - and can actually rotate it to read the dates easier. :D
