One of my local banks, the biggest one (Arvest if you're familiar with AR/OK/MO area) has to have something going on with the silver. I keep ordering boxes from them but get skunked every time. I've found a 1968 in $5000 in boxes from them. But every box I get from my 3 Bank of Americas can be relied upon to have 3 silver minimum.

I got carried away today, ended up driving an hour away from home for a "quick" trip to the bank. Got $110 in CWR from one bank, found 5 40%ers and 1 90%er, as well as a 1957 dime.

I went a US Bank in Pineville, Missouri that had $50 in CWR halves. And they were OLD rolls. When the woman took them out of the vault I about crapped my pants. The rolls were all separate kinds of paper, worn down entirely, and they smelled like pipe tobacco. I was 100% expecting them to be all Franklins or something...

But nope, skunked. They were 5 full rolls of bicentennial halves. Still exciting, but not the $$cash$$ I was hoping/praying for. Still, it's got me hooked on small town banks. Recently, I've been relying on buying machine bags from local banks, taking advantage of people turning in their coin jars. It's reliable, but now I've had a taste of those rolls that sit in the vault for 40 years. I've made up a spreadsheet for a 4 hour trip up into Southwest Missouri with about a dozen towns, most with no more than 2 banks. I'll call ahead Tuesday morning, adjust the route based on availability, and then cross my fingers and head out!

I also found a 1909 S cent today at my girlfriend's grandfather's house, in a shoebox. That was a nice find.

I will ask next week. I see different armored car companies doing transportation. I don;t know if each also has sort and count facilities or what. We are a bit different because the gaming commission and IRS have rules in place to prevent skimming from the coin count rooms. I believe that as well as costs is why the slots went coinless ?
I learned they cannot sell bags of coins to individuals because of the gaming commission rules.

Someone stole my cup holder out of my car. Had about $30 in change in it, including some ikes and $2 bills. They thankfully ignored the $150 in cents in bags on the passenger seat, though.

Just a warning to all you guys out there about keeping change in your car between errands and whatnot... god knows I'm not keeping change in my car now.

Hey guys I'm headed down to DC in a few days and was wondering how good the rolls down there are for silver. I know they're poor everywhere right now, but I'm in New England, so DC can't be much worse than here.

You guys give me hope and inspiration that I might yet find some silver halves!! I only got into this hobby about 6-7 months ago, and mostly for silver only...though now I am starting to become more of a numismatist. I'd say 75% silver hound, 25% numi. Anyways, I keep going to the banks, buying the teller trays and what ever rolls they have...and I keep getting skunked. Although I have found 3 silver quarters. I think my dream would be to not only crack open a roll and find a silver half dollar (40% or 90%) but if that coin happened to be a walking liberty I think I would pass out. That is my dream coin. Well...dream SILVER coin. It is just elegant, and badass. We just don't design anything like that anymore.

Nice job AgentX, looks like you might be on a lucky streak!

Also, can someone explain to me what is meant by 'bank bags?' Does this refer to the bags used by machines to count change? Or are they just bags that hold errant change the teller's use? I've only bought boxes, but people seem to be getting very lucky with these so-called bags. What are they?

Kanderus - I hear ya. My only advice is to keep at it. I used to roll search back in the late 80's in Goodlettsville, TN. The results were much better back then. I did hit some silver in my first couple of boxes last week, but skunk after $300 in rolls after that.

It is a looong process, and reading this thread it seems like "everyone else" is hitting all the time. Believe me, we are all going through a lot (thousands) of losers before hitting something worth posting about.

Stay at it - you will hit something! Keep the faith!

Thanks, Daship! I am definately not going to be quitting anytime soon. I think my dry spell is due to the fact that I simply have no money to go out and buy a box of anything, save for pennies. I am a poor, newly married 24 yr. old with a part time job. All I can really search through is my laundry money and some of the change/rolls that come through work when I have to break open a new roll.

I'd say in maybe 3 months time I go through ROUGHLY $300 in quarters. Dimes much less, nickels rarely, and halves only when I have the spare cash to do so. Though, all of the halves I find in rolls are NEVER bank wrapped. Always folded at both ends. Call me crazy, but I have a theory on that...

Needles to say I will continue my hunt! Who knows, maybe one day I'll find an entire roll of silver quarters or halves.

The good news is that you are searching for wealth in the most cost-effective way possible. That is really what roll searching is. You aren't paying any premium on any coins you DO find, and you can always get your initial investment back. While you are younger, and have more time than money, it is a great way to start building a collection.

Just got news that my boss is firing the other guy I work with for no call, no show yesterday.

Suffice to say, I'll be working a lot more now, and my roll searching is probably gonna slow down.

Hi everyone. First off I want to say that I am new here and new to coin roll hunting. I was fascinated by coins and loved them when I was younger but never really new what I was doing then when I collected them. My father was a loan officer at a bank and would bring me home 2 dollar bills and coins that he thought were neat. I don't know what happened to those, but here lately for some reason, I have got back interested in collecting. I went yesterday to the bank closest to me and asked if they had any rolls of Halves. The teller said he had $200 worth, which was odd because that is exactly what I had. He said, and I quote, "I didn't think we were ever going to get rid of these." I don't ever expect to find something like this again, but I will for sure try. I know it's not the biggest or best find ever, but I would say it was out of the ordinary. Here is what I found:

    (31) - 1965-70 Kennedy Halves

    (21) - 1964 Kennedy Halves

    (14) - 1951-63 Franklin Halves

    (8) - 1942-45 Walking Liberty Halves

    (1) - 1907 Barber Half Dollar

    (1) - 2006 S Kennedy Proof

It was a nice surprise. I couldn't believe they had been sitting there for who knows how long with no one, not even the tellers, curious. Just wanted to post this after reading other recent threads of people being discouraged here lately. Other members are right, there is still silver out there.

Jones, when you got the rolls of halves WHAT did the rolls look like? Were they folded over on both ends? Or machine wrapped? I could kill to have spent the $50 I have in my wallet on just 5 of those rolls. Especially if I could have got a Walking Liberty. As I mentioned earlier that is my dream silver coin! So nice!

Also, congrats!! That is way too cool!

Thanks so much Kanderus. The rolls were folded on both ends. So whoever cashed those in had no idea what they had. I hope this encourages your hunt. Good luck to you!

Indeed it does my friend! I hope and pray that someone did not get robbed. It happened to my dad, my former step-brother was real dick head. Anways, yes I hope to one day come across a nice little stash like that myself! I would go crazy!

Searching for Silver is cool. But searching for varieties and errors can be a lot more rewarding and profitable. I just snagged a 1964 Washington Quarter with a type B reverse from an old coin hoard I aquired. Silver is worth about $5, but the variety $20-25, maybe more because the Cherrypickers' Guide lists the value at $50-65. But whatever you are looking for, there are few thrills greater than finding something !! IMHO

I hope someone did not get robbed either. I would hate to know that what I found came from a robbery. Sorry to hear about you dad Kanderus. But keep hunting and you are bound to come across a stash sooner or later. Happy hunting.
