Hi all, I have a Texas state quarter that appears to have some sort of error. It's a bit hard to see in these pictures, but it appears there are rough spots on the planchet. The lettering is fine, but behind it there appears to be pitting, or roughness. These scans came out OK, but for some reason it is not showing up too well. It is right underneath and around George's nose and then behind his head and hair underneath 'in God we trust'. It *ALMOST* looks like Texas, with the panhandle being by his nose and the back coming out from behind his head. I'm not certain that's the case and I'm hoping you guys can help me identify this error. There is a little bit on the reverse of the coin as well, right above and below the panhandle in Texas. Any thoughts? Thanks!
It works fine for me... It's hosted on ImageShack where I've hosted all my other pics.. http://img822.imageshack.us/i/statequarter.jpg
Your photos are too small. The coin in the second photo is no larger than the coin itself. Please post larger photos.
if this just looks like rough cloudy looking places then it is the common struck thru grease that is so common on the state quarters.
The details are to clear especially as close to the details to be struck through grease as it tends to remove them. If it were in the fields then I could see it as grease. Struck through grease is an error common or not.
Hey guys sorry, I've been pretty busy lately but the fact is I've found 2 more quarters with these same types of symptoms.. One was TX and another was ND I believe. That scan doesn't show the true issue, and I'm not sure how to go about showing this.. Anyway I'm thinking it's not an error after all, or if it is it's a common one. I was going to take more pictures of this but I'm not sure it's anything worth looking at too closely. Thanks to all for the replies though.
It is probably struck through a thin layer of lubricant....some might say grease. A thin film of it will not obscure the details but will cause a mottled uneven appearance to parts of the fields on the coin. Thanks, Bill
I have found thousands and thousands of the new state quarters with a black lubricant or grease on them while searching thru new rolls. When I wiped the grease away these shallow struck thru areas would always be under the black grease that looked like black graphite. probably a lot of tiny dust particles may have been mixed in with the grease also because grease will collect dust. this is also really common on our new gold color dollar coins. the struck thru grease areas may start to take away from the grade of these new coins and if so the higher grade ones will be a bit more harder to find.
