ANA Convention Badges & Medals

This is one of my main collecting areas right now. I was wondering if anyone else collects this sort of exonumia?

I don't think that I have ever heard of anyone collecting ANA badges. That is a great quest. Probably very difficult.
I think that most people tend to collect easy things. For me, it is the difficulties in the task that are usually more enjoyable.
I started a small collection of notes by the founding fathers. Anything bearing their signatures. This of course includes a few numismatic items, but personal letters, and official documents also.
A great way to escape the grind of this business.

 

Yes, there are collectors of ana badges

I have been collecting ana badges since 1969 and there are severl other collectors I know of- I would like to hear from any other collectors, espceially if you have pre 1920 badges. I have a complete set of badges

I have been trying to complete a short set of ANA Convention Medals, 1969-1982, but have had no luck the last 5 years finding the 1981 New Orleans set. I chose those years because they are the only years the ANA produced a numbered 3-pc. set, 38mm silver, 38mm bronze and 19mm bronze. If either of you can help me locate the 1981, I would be more than willing to pay you for your services.

The 1982 set and the 1981 set was issued in a box instead of the Capitol plastic style holder. Of the dates you include in your short set, the 1981 seems not to show up very often. In the last 5 years, I've only seen one set offered for sale and I purchased it on ebay about 2 years ago. My best guess is it would run you in the $40 range if one were available. Rats! That's just about the time that my computer was in storage since I was in the process of relocating. If not for that, you would have had some stiff competition for it. I've been searching for more than 5 years, and I would be happy to pay $100 for a set.

Yeah, I was able to get all except the '81 within a 6-month period back in '05. I've removed all of them from the Capital holders and the '82 will remain in the presentation case, for now, but as soon as I find the '81, they will be off to NGC.

You are absolutely correct. Don not only collects convention badges and medals but also all of the special medals and presentation pieces. He will generally pay whatever it takes to get an item he needs. Recently I bid against him on a 1904 set with gold (40 made) and he got the set for $730. Two weeks later I picked up the same set for $405 as the only bidder. He's still young, only 70. I also paid more when I was his age. Ciao for now, Norm

 

I had a similar thing happen to me with the 1969 3-medal set shown above. Of course, it wasn't quite as expensive. I really wanted it, but my bid of $150 lost to a sniper at $152.50.

Less than 2 weeks later, another surfaced on eBay. I would imagine that the seller spotted the first auction and wanted to cash in on it. Anyway, I was determined that I would not lose this one, so I placed a max bid of $250 on it. I ended up winning the auction for $48.

The title of the talk was actually "Allegory and Symbolism on U.S. Pattern Coinage." So I guess this is a rare error medal.

Yes, I won it for $52.10. I'm not using Bidnapper any more, so I sat in front of the computer passing the time playing FreeCell while the minutes counted down. With about 7 seconds left, I hit the "COMMIT" button to enter my bid of $250. I wasn't taking any chances of losing it! The other bidders never saw me coming!

I too collect ANA Convention Badges and the Capital Plastics 1963-1981 3 pc. Medal sets. I just completed all of the 3 pc. Medal sets (picked up the 1965, 1980 and '81) and am quite a bit along on the Badges (although, I have quite a few more to go).
