My new coin is from Oaxaca Mexico. Oaxaca is one of the southern states in Mexico & the provisional government issued coins in the state. Many Oaxaca coins (like this 2 peso coin) include the bust of Benito Juarez on the obverse. This 2 peso is interesting to me because the obverse was struck with a smaller obverse die originally intended for making 1 peso coins. This 2 Peso is 30 mm diameter which puts it very close to the size of a USA 50 cent piece. You can see in the photo that the obverse appears to be struck with a die possibly intended for a smaller coin.
The edge of this coin is also interesting. I believe this is called a “corded” edge. The Krause catalog describes that both corded edge & plain edge coins were made in Oaxaca. Thanks for letting me share. Post em if you got em.
