What do you guys think? http://cgi.ebay.com/1977D-Washingto...54?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item3364b545b2
Yep. Otherwise both designs would be raised. With this coin the reverse design is incuse and therefore hammered.
Fred isn't needed for one this obvious. If there were a nickel over the Quarter when it was stamped there would be nothing of the quarter showing where nickel blocked the die. Simple hammer job and nothing else. Richard
Sold! For $150. SMH. Even though the buyer is at fault for being dumb enough to buy without knowing what it is, I still feel bad for them because the seller clearly misrepresented the item as a genuine error.
Boy it sure is a small world. This is the same darn coin that I had it out with the seller over. I told him it was a altered fake error coin and get it off Ebay. he told me a big bunch of BS. and said he took it to a coin show and PCGS had a booth and said they said it was real or something like that and said the slabbing cost was more than the coin was worth so he didn't get them to slab it. I told him there was no way that PCGS would have told him this fake junk was real. Well you can see he sold this thing anyway. How cruel can some folks really be.
Folks please be careful on Ebay , sometimes both sides of a coin is done this way . stay away from the sunken in and backwards design coins. they are all easy to make fake error coins unless one side of the coin has a perfect original design of a coin die on it. a man made error of this type will always have damage on the other side and will be squashed out of shape and larger than normal.
Ebay buy from a sell that has a feedback score above 1000 and ask around the forums.Big No No snipe it before ck out a desk top /full screen CPU. try to buy or bid on TPG coin too after you ck out the number with Ngc & Pcgs. :thumb:and if anyone know how to look up numbers for Anacs POST the link Please:thumb: http://www.NGCcoin.com http://www.pcgs.com
I'm replying to my own posts #13 and #14 above this one. It looks like I may have almost made it look bad to buy coins off Ebay. Ebay is a good place to buy coins if someone knows how to spot the altered and fake coins on there. I have bought some really good coins off Ebay in the past.
how do these guys get those coins that have massive errors? like "struck off center" dont they check every coin for errors?
No they don't check every coin, just random ones and sometimes they get by. Back in the day, the coins used to be shipped loose in bags, so the errors were even more likely to get out. Nowadays, most coins are rolled, so more errors are caught and destroyed.
