I just won this after posting a bid a couple of days ago and fully expecting to get sniped at the last second. Perhaps the last two bids this morning which doubled the cost plus disuaded the snipers. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220736912515&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT Now what do you think of my acquisition and price paid. Did I pay too much, about right or get a deal? Attribution, condition and speculation on what's under the lacquer are all part of the picture. As usual, I'll post much better pictures when the coin comes in and I can photograph it.
I still haven't learned enough about the attribution of early large cents and grading. Would the obverse scratches prevent a non details grade?
I'm thinking that you did average. The coin is scratched but it is reasonably rare. You got market value. With this kind of political response, I should run for Congress.
Okay - I latched onto S-142. Going to admit I just scrolled through the pictures looking at the ribbon ends and stems. For some reason(not logical) I started reading S-142 and it seems to line up to me. Plus some of the weakness on this one seems to match Tom Decks. So an R-5+ coin and nothing wrong with the price. I would probably say F details net G4. Now I am sure conder will log in take 2 seconds and answer you.
Dang - 0 replies when I started looking for the sheldon number and 4 replies when I posted my answer. Never left this thread.
That's what I came up with. This is the first appearance of the style 2 punches (Most easily seen on the L and R) which were generally used on 1798 and onward. The imbedded 7 confirms the Obverse. The 2 reverses are easily distinguished by the position of the leaf under N. It's centered on the S-142 and to the right side on the S-143. ( I guess some people might find the stemless wreath on the S-143 a little easier for distinction. The O(NE) almost being over the C(ENT) and further apart than any other Wreath Reverse is also diagnostic) Now there are no problem free examples listed in the condition census by Breen (13) with the top coin graded at a net VF20. The axial misalignment which usually makes the STATES disappear must have been corrected on this one or at least minimized as well as allowing the end of the bust to show more boldly. It is often one of the last 2 or 3 1797s needed to complete the 1797 set.
I checked Heritage Archives and this is definitely the lowest condition of the 8 in their records. It is about the same as the others in detail though with less axial misalignment than typical. One person got a real bargain in 2007 by paying a little less for a superior example. Absent that example, the rest went for between $488 to $6K. All in all though, not bad for a variety with about 3 dozen known.
Woohooo - just glad I got it right. Were all 8 actually different coins? Sometimes I have seen same coin in new or different holder. Good pickup.
They were each different. Far too many were entombed. ANACs was the main culprit. They were G6 to VF30, none of which grade above VF20 by EAC standard. Most were VG8 according to TPGs. It's only 8, so here goes: NGC VG8 Obverse 21 Brockage so it 'could' be a S-143 or S-142. $5,750 7/31/08 PCGS VF30 $6,325 2/15/08 ANACs VG8 $149.50 3/27/07 ANACs G6 $488.75 9/24/06 NGC VG8 $1,725 1/24/06 PCGS VG8 $690 5/4/05 NCS VG10 $460 1/13/05 Uncertified VG10 $678.50 9/11/97 OK. After eliminating the brockage, it's only 7.
I don't think he carries it all the way to 36 or so. Of course, why not if there are less than 100 coins?
Now what do you think of this second coin from the same seller that I just won? Once again, it belongs on my island of misfit and unloved coins. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...7LmZTe0%3D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT I'm surprised because it was properly attributed, but I guess nobody cared.
This one only has 5 sales in the Heritage Archives: ANACs F-12 Details $1,150 2/15/08 NCS VG Details $805 1/24/06 NCS G6 $1,092.50 1/13/05 Uncertified VG10 $316.25 5/31/01 Uncertified G5 $460 9/11/97 Sold along with a S-203 as a pair.
I'm thinking this is a $1,000+ coin if not for the scratches. Easily the best of the group absent the damage. most of what looks like wear is actually from a bulging die which is diagnostic along with the stemless inside leaf at (CEN)T. The other stemless leaf is too far gone do to a later die state..
