:desk: Hi guys, My Dad has an 1787 silver coin that was minted in Mexico. It has identical markings to the 8 reales coin with the bust of Carlos the 3rd on it with the exception that on the back instead of reading REX there is simply an r in the same spot. Also different is the size, the coin measures only 18mm in circumfrence and is appx. half the thickness of a normal dime. It's been in the family a long time, it was kept as the first piece of money made by my great great great grandpa's general store in DC. Any info would help. Thanks Miranda
from your description, I would say it is a 1/2 reale from 1787. With the limited size of the coin, the legends were significantly reduced to abreviations.
Howdy Miranda - Welcome to the Forum !! Does your coin look like this one ? If so, its just what Rick said it was. It's a half reale struck in .8960 silver, it should weigh 1.6917 grams with an actual silver weight of .0487 oz. If the condition is similar to that of the one I pictured the value would be about $25 - $30. But from a sentimental point of view - it's priceless
