Ordered my box of Half Dollars from the bank today! The bank workers seemed puzzled why i wanted so many! "To pick through" I said. But what are the odds I will find anything?? I figured there would at least be 2 or 3 silvers in there?? Or is that optimistic?? Just wondering what the averages are per box if anybody has a clue.
I'll guess 3 40%'ers and a 1964. I know of a few other searchers in that area and I don't think any of them have had great finds.
I would take that haha! I'm not expecting to find anything. I could buy a cemetery and people would stop dying. That's my luck.
Searching half dollar rolls used to bring a pretty good return only a couple years ago. Then someone had to let the cat out of the bag!!!
I went through a box today and got nothing. My bank just happend to have a box laying around that someone didn't pick up. Luck for them, suck for me. I got one 1967 out of $160 of handrolls.
I picked up a $500 box of halves and imagine my dismay when I opened the box and 90% were marked up with marker and assorted tags from previous searchers. I was skunked and didn't get a single silver coin. My credit union teller didn't even blink when I asked for the box either. When I picked it up, I asked her if many other folks ordered boxes and her reply was "yes, we've got people in here every day ordering boxes and asking for halves". Guess I'm a little late to the party. I gave all to my wife to spend. She took them to Wells Fargo, and they were totally fine with her bringing them in, like it happens all the time.
I think you're right, the party is over, when silver was under $20 it was somewhat easy. I'll never buy boxes again. I just hope to pick off a few here and there from customer wrapped rolls.
I've had tellers tell me "Oh, you're the only one that still orders boxes, haha." Guess I missed the game by miles and now am just picking up the scraps.
over 270 boxes, I average 3.12 silver coins per box. I used to average 3.9 or so, but there have been many shutouts lately...
