What is your definition of rare? And does that include varieties, etc. In my mind there are no rare wheat pennies - expensive as all get out, yes, but not rare. Just my opinion.

Well I mean like worth thousands of dollars. Varieties do count.

    I'd go:

    55/55
    58/58
    69S/69S

Since wheat's went from 09 to 58, I'll go with the 22 "weak D", 55 DDO, and 43 coppers. Ok, the 44 steels might be my fourth choice.

I've always wondered why you always here about that elusive '43 copper but the '44 steels don't seem to be as popular. I'd personally rather have a '44 steel than a '43 copper.

1958 Doubled die, 1943 D copper, 1944 steel. And Mark I think you would have to admit those forst two are rare with just two known of the first one and the second being unique.

I've never seen any of the 43 coppers or 44 steelies. I understand from the coin show that the complete set of 43 coppers and 44 steelies were at the show in Florida. I would have loved to see them.

I agree but would list them in this order of importance:

    1) 1955 DDO
    2) 1943 Copper
    3) 1922 Weak D
    4) 1944 Steel

    If we're talking true rarity...

Then any of the 43/44 off-metal errors.

I can go online right now and buy all the 22 No D strong reverses, 55 double dies, 72 double dies, etc that I want. If I had all the money in the world the chance to buy the 43s and 44 don't come up all that often.

A '44 steel cent is truly rare, a 55 DDO is merely expensive, like an S-VDB.

Most definetly. And based off the answer - "worth thousands of dollars", the 1909-S VDB can be included, but I don't consider it or the 55 DDO rare. The demand and prices qualify them cause those puppies are expensive. The only one I could have come up with was the 43 copper - forgot about the 44 and 58 until I revisited this thread.
