First question, does PCGS do crossovers like NGC? I saw it listed in NGC's tiers, but did not see it in PCGS's. But I could have passed over it. Seconds, does companies like PCGS and NGC go to the Whitman expo's in Philadelphia and Baltimore? And third, would they do crossover's at shows like this if they do indeed attend? Thanks for any help.
Yes, yes, and yes. However, when submitting a crossover, if you are heavily invested in a coin, its best to specify a minimum acceptable grade otherwise your expensive MS66 could fall to an inexpensive MS65.
That was another question I had. Can you tell them if the grade was going to drop, just to leave it encapsulated?
If you do submit a crossover to PCGS, be sure to really clean up the current holder. Make sure you polish away all the scratches you can on your current slab. You really want the PCGS graders to be able to clearly see the coin through the holder. If you specifiy a minimum grade (which you should) the PCGS graders much first evaluate the coin in the current holder to be sure it meets that minimum grade. If they can't tell through the current holder because it's banged up, dirty, scratched, etc. they won't go any further and will tell you the coin will not cross into a PCGS holder. While you may think that means PCGS didn't think your coin met the minimum grade, that isn't necessarily true. It could mean that, but it could also mean that PCGS just could tell for sure in their attempt to grade it through the old plastic.
Before you decide whether to submit it for crossover or not, you may want to read this thread that was posted on the NGC forums. http://boards.collectors-society.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=4589784#Post4589784 Chris
Thanks for all the comments, everyone. One more question, what would PCGS charge for this service at and expo?
Depends on how quickly you want it done... show is usually $65, get it in in the morning and you should get it back that day. A straight walkthrough is $200+ and happens quickly.
