an eBay "big lot" that might have been fun...

    Silver Dimes/Quarters/Half Dollars/huge lot collection

I calculated face value here at $273.10. At 21x face, that works out to around $5735; the auction closed at $5300, plus $35 shipping.

I wanted to go in on this one, but it was a little too big a chunk for my nerves.

It looks like there were some semi-key Walkers in the lot, but nothing in particularly nice condition. A full set of Franklins (except for 63 and 63d), and lots of "miscellaneous".

Here's what I liked about the lot:
    • it looks like an "old collection" -- the Franklin album has the last few years hand-written in (!)
    • it included several semi-key dates, with a total still under melt value

    Here's what I didn't like:
    • it was pretty big (by my standards and budget)
    • the seller has listed valuable single coins previously, so anything really nice had probably been picked

I think the winner got a great deal. I kind of wish I could've gotten it. But it's going to take a little more experience before I'm ready to bite off chunks this big.

........and if the buyer is lucky enough to find a dealer to buy it at 10% back of melt, he'll only lose $173.50.

I bet it was a dealer who bought it?

Yeah, it most likely was as it's too big of a chunk of money for the average Joe to absorb and especially to make a quick profit off of. just my 2 cnts!

The seller is not familiar with coins.
"Liberty Standing Half Dollars" instead of Walking Liberty Half Dollars.
"Liberty Head Dimes" instead of Barber Dimes.

    But he's reasonably educated.
Grammar and spelling are quite good.

I was wondering about this also, note, Liberty Head Dimes were actually Mercury dimes, often referred to as Winged Liberty Head, so they were close.

I think the seller is cagey, making the potential buyer think the seller does not have a clue and can be cherry picked. Not so in this case, the seller has 95 transactions with various types of coinage, he's by no means a dummy.

    Happy Collecting

And if that's what he does, without even bothering to fish out the Walker semi-keys, I'd say that he'll richly deserve it.

Last weekend, when the spot price had closed at approximately 20.5x face, our local coin show had one dealer buying silver at 18x face and one buying at 19x face. Is there really that much "luck" involved in finding a buyer at 90% of melt? (Honest question; besides what I saw at the show, I really don't know how things are in the market.)

Oho! So, by not placing a bid myself, I saved you at least $50 (the minimum increment at that level) -- you can send it to my PayPal account. :)

It would be great if you could do an "eBay: what was he thinking?"-type post once it arrives and show what those Walker keys look like!

I will take some pics of them for sure....planned on putting them on my facebook anyways lol.

PS If you would have bid you would have won ;)

Oooh, that's the wrong thing to say to a regretful non-bidder. :)

Still looking for someone to talk me down from tonight's Buy It Now -- if I go in on this one, I'm gonna be overshooting my PayPal balance, and that's a big psychological barrier...

Make an offer you are comfortable with... before someone else does! :D Asking $1400, offer 1300-1350... I actually put in a low ball offer on a pretty nice toned 47S dime and got it for almost half the original asking price...you never know!

Not much help in talking down i guess :) Or just offer your paypal balance and take a longshot ;)

Yah, I already did that. But every hour that passes makes me realize that there hasn't been anybody else who thinks it's worth the full Buy It Now price. Hmm.

Rats, missed it by a regret-inducingly tiny amount. :( (So, which of you outbid me?)

Wait a sec, you mean the coin in the 1938-D slot wasn't actually a 38-D? I think I would've had to raise a pretty big stink about that. I would've at least called it out in the feedback. One of his photos featured that coin in that slot; to my mind, that's intentional deception.
