hello, i collected coins since 1990 or so when i was 6, and i found a penny today that had the memorial side stamped twice, almost at a 90 degree angle. then on the lincoln side, there was the middle of the memorial. just a little spot, about 1/4 of the size of the penny. just wondering about that? what is that called? and would it be worth some more pennies? sorry, it is a 1987. thanks, cory
Unless it is a man made (fake) error, then you have a coin that was Double Struck on the Reverse and has a Die Clash on the Obverse! If the extra images are incuse, then they are more than likely man made. However, you could have a coin that was Double Struck on the Reverse and that was struck on the Obverse with a coin in between the Die and Planchet (Partial Brockage) when it was Double Struck but this scenario doesn't seem likely. Frank
sorry, incuse? and the picture... i will post one up as soon as i get a camera. whcich should be soon. also, HUNTSMAN53, how do i tell it was fake or not? is there any easier way to tell? probably not but it shouldn't hurt to ask right? thanks again cory
Incuse means that the details (image) and/or lettering are inwards or inset into the coin! The details (image) and lettering should rise out and above the surface or field of the coin unless it is a $2.50 or $5.00 Indian Gold Coin which has incuse details and lettering. Detecting a fake or counterfeit coin or man made error takes some time to learn and experience! There are some good books on how to detect counterfeit coins that can be purchased through a Coin Dealer, online or at a Coin Show. After unknowingly purchasing several counterfeited coins, I made it a priority to learn how to tell if a coin is a fake (counterfeit) or not. Frank
Huntsman 53 you sure are right folks needing to learn how to detect fake or altered error coins. I saw on Ebay 2 days ago where some poor buyer spent 152.50 for a altered coin to make it look a little like a error coin. someone had put a nickel on top of a quarter and struck the nickel with a hammer. this left part of the nickels design sunken into the quarter. I told the seller what he or she had and they still sold this worthless thing anyway.
Hey, rascal.....You answered a six year old post. Watch the dates in the upper right corner. Huntsman 53 hasn't been on in a couple of years and the OP hasn't been on since 2005.
Now what difference does it make if I reply to a six year old post? The person I replied to may be still alive and anyway you read my post. Maybe the information I gave on here might even help you.
