the value of maundy coins is dependent on the year of issue, one of the earliest sets availlable are the charles II issues, they are issued by the reigning monarch each year on the thursday before easter (maundy thursday) and they are in lieu of the earlier tradition of the monarch washing the feet of poor people and giving them gifts of clothes and or food, this practice was stopped after the english civil war when the country effectively became a republic and re-started with the accession of charles II following the death of oliver cromwell. however the traditional method of washing and gifts was replaced by monetary renumeration, and it later became tradition that the actual number of coins in 1, 2, 3 and 4penny denominations matched the age of the soveriegn. the coins are always made from silver and are theoretically legal tender, this link is a really comprehensive detail of the coinage and their history..............

    Taylor, Welcome to CoinTalk.

There's a CT member, Clinker who posts fantastic "TRIVIA" threads from time to time. He posted an excellent one on Maundy coins some time ago:

Here is one of mine I posted on 4-28-09. I kept the 4 coin set together. Only the 2D had this great toning.
You will find a lot of good information here at CT if you search the word "Maundy"
