I was wondering if anyone knows anything about these.

I have one that is an 1867, minted at San Luis Potosi mint, (can't remember the mintmaster's initials right off the top of my head, but will check on that and will also check the date and mint to make sure I didn't mistake those) Either way, when I looked it up (and had it in front of me so I actually did know the date, mint, etc) in my price guides (World Coins 1801-1900, North American coins, all Krause publication books) it is listed as "--rare--".

It is in F condition, however, it has a hole through the top of it (like if someone made it into a pendant).

    Any help would be appreciated.

Howdy Andrei - Welcome to the Forum !!

The only rare date I am aware of for this mint would be the 1860 Pi RO. Is this the coin you speak of ?

Getting back to it, it is an 1867 Pi (San Luis Potosi) LR (mintmaster or assayer's initials). In World Coins of the 19th Century, as well as North American Coins, and another one I can't remember off the top of my head it was listed as "rare".

ComradeAndrei,if it was an 8 Reales,it would have to be a Republican one. There were Republican coins struck between 1864 & 1867 as a way of conveying opposition to the Emperor Maximilian, who was the younger brother of Emperor Franz Josef of Austria-Hungary.Emperor Maximilian was shot at Queretaro along with 2 loyal generals.

In the 4th edition Krause SCWC 1801-1900 the coin you mention is listed. It is not listed as rare however. Value in F is listed as $250. If the coin is holed as you describe the value would be a fraction of that. That's about I can tell you.

It will be worth around US$25 then,as seen as it is a holed coin.

What year did the 4th edition come out? I must have an older edition. In mine it is listed as rare. What would be the reason for the change? Did they find a whole bunch more, or did they decide that it didn't merit that designation? I've kinda been out of the numismatic hobby for a while...

Yep, knew that. Actually, I was always kind of interested in Mexico's Imperial days (under both Emperor Agustin de Iturbide and Emperor Maximilian). My coin is the republican type (eagle obverse, liberty cap reverse).

Well, that's still 5x what I paid for it. I suppose I'm doing good then!:D

2004 - The reason for the change usually isn't because they suddenly found a bunch more, but rather because information regarding the surviving population has improved. In other words they now know there are more surviving examples than they once thought.

Thanks for the info. Well, it is kind of a bummer to know that my "rare" coin isn't quite so, but I still made out well in the end.
