Hi, I was looking very closely at a 1936 S Buffalo Nickle I have and noticed you can see a double of the date by the 1, and a slight double on the rest of the numbers. The six is also very clear. I know there is a 1936 double die, but I have not seen anything for the 1936 S. Am I crazy or not...have any of you seen this? I am sure mine is an S mint mark. P.S. I am scanning a really high resolution image of the date to add here, but that will take a while to do. Thanks
Coneca lists one, but it's a class VI which would just mean extra thickness on the date. What are you seeing? http://www.varietyvista.com/Variety%20Master%20Listings/buffalo%20doubled%20dies.htm#_1936-S
Here is a scanned image. The resolution is not too good, but the lines I have pointed out are not dirt and much more defined when looking through a loop. If this image will not enlarge I will try a larger version. It looks like there is another date (same year) under the top one...this images is not as clear as I had hoped. Click to enlarge
So....after looking at this do you folks think I am correct? I am fairly new to this hobby so I am not certain of my judgement yet.
Thanks for taking a look. I have never seen a double date stamp in real life to compare this to, so I was not sure if tha is what I was looking at.
I am not a DD expert with the buffaloes, but the arrows do point at Machine doubling I believe. However, and here is where the details of the photo break down, I tend to see a faint line about half way across the date ( especially the 9) which could indicate a DD, but it also could be an artifact from the enlarging. The 9 looks a little "fat " Jim
Thanks for your input everyone. Sorry I could not get a closer photo. Maybe I should send it in to get graded. I bought it from a shop and they graded it MS64. I am not really concerned if their grade was close or not, but am more interested in the double date thing. I assume they may not have looked very closely since there are no DD listed for a 1936 S in the Cherry Picker Guide.
This coin would have to be examined in hand to make a determination. Could be, but could be die-shift doubling as well.
I think this is more like a 1936 double date buffalo nickel. If anyone can help I have had no success finding any info on a 1936 double date buffalo nickel with no mint mark. I've searched online, & in every book possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm interested to know if there are any know certifications of this error type, & what the current value could be the coin is in very good shape. jwill
there is a 1936 doubled die obverse and doubled die reverse but none minted in san fransisco mint this is information in my cherry picker guide
